NFL Will Not Change Overtime Rules

"After further review, the NFL overtime rules won't change. NFL Competition Committee co-chairman Rich McKay, speaking on a national conference call, said there will be no adjustment to the current overtime rules. The committee met for 10 days in Naples, Fla., and, after consulting players and conducting a league-wide survey from the 32 clubs, there wasn't enough support to make any proposal to change the current overtime rules, which were created to minimize the chance of ties (ESPN)."

I really love the NFL. I think they have the best setup of regular season, playoffs, and in general run their sport very well. This is really the only problem I have with the NFL system. There is just way too much riding of a stupid coin toss. It should be changed to the college rules, except back the ball up to the 40 or 45 yard line. In case you don't know the college rules are...

"Currently the NCAA overtime period works like this: both teams get a possession starting from their opponent's 25-yard line. No matter what, each team gets a chance to score. If the score is still tied after the first overtime, the teams swap whichever was on offense and defense in the first period. If the game goes longer than two overtimes, starting in the third period you must attempt a two-point conversion after scoring a touchdown (John Guzowski)."

Right now I just think it is unfair to have one team win a coin flip go down the field and kick a field goal to win the game, without the other team even getting a chance with the ball. Last year the team that won the coin toss had a 43.4 success rate of scoring right when they got the ball. Overall the team that won the coin flip won 63 percent of the time (I know I thought it would be more too). Still, I think it would be better for the fans/players if they had a system more like the NCAA.
