Red Sox Moves
The Sox traded Casey Kotchman and in return we will receive Bill Hall and a significant amount of cash. It is believed that the Mariners will be picking up the bulk of Hall’s $8.4 million contract, since more than $7 million came with Hall from the Brewers. With that, plus the shedding of Kotchman, who is arbitration-eligible, it appears that the Sox are saving enough to account for Beltre’s deal.
Hall played third base, left field, and right field in 2009, and has played second base and shortstop at the major league level. He peaked offensively in 2006, when he hit .270 with 35 home runs and 85 RBIs for the Brewers. His numbers have declined since then; Hall hit just .201 with Milwaukee and Seattle in 2009 in 365 at-bats.
I don't mind Hall, he adds some speed and depth.
in other news Ellsbury is moving to left field. This seemed pretty obvious to me figuring Mike Cameron is a far superior defensive player than Ells. With this happening we now have an extremely fast and extremely American outfield (An Indian, a black guy and a whit guy, awesome). Ellsbury's strength is lateral movement but that he needed improvement coming in and going back on balls. That made him a better fit playing right in front of the Green Monster at Fenway Park. I think this move is good, but still think Ellsbury could be on the move sometime this year. With the speed and defense that we have balls shouldn't find the grass.
