Daily Red Sox Spring Training Update

- Mike Lowell looks good, and will play in his first spring training game tomorrow. This is a great sign for the Red Sox, as Lowell seems to be healthier then they expected at this point. He has been through some tough workout days, and said he felt no pain at all in his hip.

- All reports I have read say that Lugo will be the opening day starting SS for the Sox. He has been hitting really well lately, and went 3-3 in their last game.

- There is no date set for Penny to pitch in a game, but he has been throwing off flat ground, and seems to be improving. Hopefully he can get back out their soon, but it seems like he is not going to be ready for the start of the season.

- Daisuke Matsuzaka made his first start for Japan in the World Baseball Classic Saturday, a 14-2 victory over Korea in Tokyo. Matsuzaka allowed two earned runs on four hits and two walks in four innings, throwing 65 pitches, 39 for strikes.

- Youk and Pedroia seem to be picking up where they left off last season. Both have been helping the USA WBC team to a 2-0 start. Youk has been hitting cleanup, which is really impressive with the guys they have on the USA team.

- Ellsbury will be out a couple days with a pulled hamstring. Francona says it's nothing to worry about, but this is the kind of shit that lingers. Hopefully he will get enough time off to fully heal it.

The Sox face the Pirates today at 1:05pm on NESN.
