"NFL owners are meeting in California this week, and this is usually the time when compensatory draft choices are awarded to teams. The Patriots are expected to receive at least a couple of compensatory draft picks. Compensatory draft choices are awarded to teams who are deemed to have a net loss of compensatory free agents from the previous year (e.g. Asante Samuel). They are a vehicle to help teams recover from those defections, and are determined based on a complex formula from the NFL Management Council. The highest compensatory draft choice is No. 97, at the end of the third round (Boston.com)."
Might not sound like a big deal, but these draft picks can mean a lot to a team. If you can remember Tom Brady, the 199th overall selection in 2000, was a compensatory draft pick. So it is interesting to note that the Patriots will have even more picks, and since they already have a couple extra there should be a decent sized youth movement on the Patriots next year, which is exactly what their aging defense needs.
