Sox Sign Lester To 5 Year Deal

"Jon Lester, according to a report by Yahoo! Sports and attributed to a "source close to the team," has agreed to a five-year, $30 million deal with a $13 million team option for 2014, pending a physical (Boston Globe)."

What a deal for the Sox. He will be making about $6 million a year, which is a steal for arguably the best lefty in the AL. Lester really broke through last year, and looks like he will be one of the leaders of the staff for years to come. It will be interesting to see if all those innings he pitched last year will come back to hurt him (I don't think it will), but either way it is good to see that Lester will be in Boston for a long time. Now I would like to see the Sox bring Jason Bay to a 3-5 year extension, since his contract runs out after this season.

DP Take:

The left-hander has agreed to a 5-year, $30 million extension with the Red Sox, according to a Yahoo sports report on Sunday. Boston reportedly holds a $13 million option for 2014.

The question is, who wouldn't like this deal. The Sox have now signed their future in Youk, Pedroia, and Lester for long term deals and for less money than they are worth. Lester had an incredible year last year posting a 16-6 with a 3.21 ERA in 33 starts and some may consider him, not Beckett or Dice K our ace of the rotation. I agree and support these extensions even if it came with the loss of Mark Teixeira to the Yankees. This also make Lester more valuable in our fantasy league as well.
