LOST Recap: "The Substitute"

WOW....that's what I have to say. It has been awhile since we have had an episode of LOST that left you feeling like you knew a lot more about what was going on. Not a lot, of course, but they definitely seem to be heading the in the right direction.

The episode was Locke-centric (which are usually my favorite ones). Is there a character that moves the show long more then Locke? I don't think so. I think the easy way to do this is to break it up into two parts. Part one we will talk about what is going on in the flash sideways (plane never crashing timeline), and the other one will be the on island timeline.

FLASH SIDEWAYS:

Locke is very much the same as he was in the first season. He is handicapped his life kind of sucks, blah, blah, blah. Yet there is something different about this John Locke. In the first season Locke is always trying to change, or fulfill his destiny, but now he seems like he is more accepting of who he is. A lot of that can be attributed to his wife (Peggy from married with children), and a surprise visit from Rose.

Anyways, Locke is shit out of luck again, as his boss found out that he used the company dime to go on his "walkabout". This obviously doesn't go over well and he is fired. Luckily, Hugo owns the company, and the two happen to cross paths in the parking lot. Hugo hooks him up with another job, and Locke is on his way. His interviewer of course is Rose, who finally gets him to admit there are certain things that he can't do, since he can't walk. This doesn't go over well, until Rose drops the beans that she has cancer. They finally find a job that suits him, as a substitute teacher.

Locke's home life isn't bad. He has a loving wife-to-be, yet he still has day to day struggles, like getting out of his car. A lot of the episode was spent on his struggle to either accept who he is, or once again try to fight his fate. This takes the form of Jack's number (in the first episode Jack gives Locke his number and says he can help him). Locke finally decides he is not going to do it, and his wife rips up the card. Yea, I think that card is coming back too.

There is another surprise visit as Ben works at one of the schools. We don't see him for very long, but he seems a lot different. A lot less evil, which we will get to later.

ON ISLAND:

By far the worst part of the episode was the "smoke vision" in the beginning. Listen LOST we get that Flocke is the smoke monster, we don't need to see a first person cruise around the island. Ok...just had to get that out.

Flocke is out recruiting for his team of "we aren't doing this anymore". First recruit...Sawyer. Sawyer is being miserable, drinking bottles of whiskey, and bumming around his old house. Flocke comes in and Sawyer says "I thought you were dead", and then Flocke replies "I am" or something to that affect. You got to love Sawyer at this point, because he honestly doesn't give a fuck. So, he tags along with Flocke, because Flocke says he'll give him answers (how many times have we heard that). So, they go out marching through the jungle. Then things start to get creepy.

Flocke sees a kid in the jungle with blood on his hands. We later see him again, except this time Sawyer can see him too! Flocke goes running after this mystery kid, and falls down. When he looks up the mystery kid tell him that he broke the rules, and you weren't allowed to kill him.

Meanwhile, Sawyer runs into Richard (who was unable to see the kid earlier in the episode). He tells Sawyer that he needs to go to the temple, and that Flocke is going to kill them all. Sawyer tell him that he doesn't care he just wants answers, and Flocke has them.

So, after all this creepiness, Flocke and Sawyer team back up and make their way to the cliffs. There is a scene where Sawyer almost dies, and Flocke saves his life. He bring him to a cave, where there are names crossed out all over the ceiling. Who's names? Just a bunch of dead people, except a couple. Sawyer, Kate, Jack, ect and next to their names are numbers 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42. BAM!

Flocke says he had 3 choices. Go to some part of the island and let things play out, leave the island, or become the new Jacob and protect the island. Sawyer picks leaving...

On the other part of the island. The real Locke is finally buried, and Ben very causally admits he murdered Locke.

Questions:

- Who is the kid running around in the jungle? Why couldn't Richard see him, but Sawyer could?

- Is Jacob good? (got to love that light/dark good vs. evil joke Flocke made in the cave.

- What does Flocke have to do to get off the island? Who/What is he? Why does he need to recruit?

- Are these two timeline going to converge. If so, how?

- What did Jacob mean when he said "they're coming"?

Theories:

- At first I thought the kid in the jungle was Jacob, but I have started to think otherwise. Maybe it is Aaron. At some point they are going to tie that kid into this story.

- I still don't think Jacob is "good". He has really played with all these people's lives, and seemingly just to save this stupid island.

- I think Jack will be faced with the same choices Sawyer did (run, take over Jacobs job, or leave is the island). I think Jack will chose to be Jacob.

If you have any questions, thoughts, or theories leave them in the comment section.
