I reported last week that the NFLPA expects there to be a lockout in 2011, well things don't seem to be going much better for the NBA. Union vice president Adonal Foyle of the Orlando Magic said the offer put forth last week by commissioner David Stern's office is "ludicrous."
Basically the NBA wants a hard cap, which would take out the "Larry Bird rule", which lets you go over the cap to keep your own free agents. To be honest the whole NBA cap thing is really hard to understand, but I can see why the owners would want this. On the other side, I think they are going to have a terrible time getting the players to agree with this unless the salary cap is raised quite a bit.
It would be awful if the NBA and NFL did not play in 2011, but I am a lot more confident that the NBA will be able to reach an agreement then I am with the NFL. The NFL has so many problems and I think this lockout is going to be a serious turning point for that league (good or bad), while the NBA does have a lot of problems I think a lot of the rules will stay the same, and thus the league won't be shutdown.
