Magic @ Celtics: Game 6
Thank God the NBA rescinded one of Perkins technicals, because the Celtics are getting low on big men. Big Baby and Wallace are both game time decisions, and Daniels has been basically ruled out (who cares, right?). I think they will both play, but the Celtics are really going to need Perkins to eat up some minutes tonight.
There is good news for the Celtics. There is a new set of refs being used tonight, so hopefully it won't be that catastrophe we saw last game.
The focus tonight has to be to shut down Jameer Nelson. Howard is going to get his point, and that's fine, but you can't have Nelson dropping 24 points on you like he did last game. Rondo has to be all over him, and he really should be because I think Nelson sucks.
Other then that I want to see more for KG. He looked really old last game, and I want to see the life in his legs that we saw earlier in the season.
But if this game is fairly called I think the Celtics are going to come out angry and whoop some ass.
Celtics win 108-93
Player of the Game: Rondo
Game starts at 8:30pm on ESPN.

AMNRL Begins June 5!!
I know you have all been wondering, where did that Rugby guy go? What happened to all those sweet posts about a sport I never heard of and truthfully don't give a shit about? Well here I am fuckers so listen up;
American National Rugby League (AMNRL) is starting next week (June 5) so I will be starting up the weekly coverage again. The AMNRL features teams from the Boston 13's to the Jacksonville Axemen and in 8 other cities in between. It is the largest national Rugby competition we have in the US.
There a few places you can get solid Rugby League news however non of them are written by an actual player. Thats right, Im not only the CEO, but Im also a client (hair club for men?). I play for the Fairfax Eagles in Virginia. We have been in the AMNRL for about 3 years now and are looking to make a big splash this year.
There are a few other teams that have recruited some serious talent from other countries, including the Jacksonville Axemen who have a NRL (Australia) star playing for them, and the Philidelphia Fight who just brought on two West Coast Samoan Americans, and three Australians. The New York Knights will have their hands full defending their Grand Final title this Summer.
It is shaping up to be a great season. I plan to bring you scores from around the league, highlights, some game footage, good pics of live action and if your lucky some close-ups of some nasty battle wounds. That's the best part of having a writer who plays in the league right? Nasty battle wounds?
Cheers,
AC
Royals @ Red Sox Preview
The Sox been surging until last night, so hopefully the Wake can get them back on track. If he pitches as well as he did last time (8 inning 0 runs against the Phillies) then it shouldn't be a problem. Yet, you just really don't know. Wakefield and Dice-K are very similar in that regard. They could go out and give you 8 innings of scoreless baseball, or they could be out of the game by the 4th.
Boston will be facing the underrated Kyle Davies. He held 5 of his last 6 opponents to 2 or fewer runs. His numbers won't jump out at you (3-3 4.53 ERA), but this kid has the talent to rip through the Sox (especially if they don't get any clutch hitting like last night).
Anyways, I wish I could say that I have a good feeling about this game, but I don't.
Royals win 5-4

Ellsbury Doesn't Want To Play?
Interesting article today in the Globe by Tony Massarotti. The article is about Ellsbury and his "reputation" of not wanting to play baseball.
"Before we go any further, we all need to understand something here. This is not solely about this season and about whether Ellsbury has bruised ribs or hairline fractures. This goes well beyond that. During his rookie season of 2008, Ellsbury missed small chunks of time with various assorted ailments. He came to the Red Sox having earned a reputation in the minor leagues of being someone who required a great deal of, well, maintenance. Last year, during a rock-solid season in which Ellsbury batted .301, stole 70 bases, and played in 153 games, manager Terry Francona spoke of how Ellsbury was beginning to understand the "responsibility" of playing in the major leagues, which was a nice way of saying that Ellsbury had an obligation to his manager and teammates to play through minor issues and be in the lineup.
Then came last offseason, the departure of Jason Bay, and the acquisition of Mike Cameron. Ellsbury was bumped from center field to left, a change that clearly did not sit well with him. In Kansas City April 11, Ellsbury collided with third baseman Adrian Beltre and suffered his existing rib injury, and you could hear all the pink hats in Camp Jacoby groan simultaneously (Boston Globe)."
I had no idea he had this "reputation" in the minors. I really hope it isn't true, and that Ellsbury is hurt, but I respect a lot of what Tony Mazz writes, and this scares me a bit. He also goes on to say that Boras is now his agent, and he doesn't like his players playing at less then 100%.
In the end, the Sox can't afford to have another JD Drew. Ellsbury changes this lineup so much when he is in it, but this is definitely something to keep an eye on.

So What Should the Bruins Do?
The Bruins lead to change. They need better leaders, and fewer followers. They need scoring. They need consistency. They have to build on their strengths, and try to hide their weaknesses.
I. FIRE CLAUDE
Julien has to go. He's an excellent defensive coach, but look at the playoffs this year. Scoring wins as much as defense. Moreover, he's not a playoff coach. An excellent strategist, but an uninspirational leader. He's Brutus, not Mark Antony. He's the math teacher, not the gym teacher.
II. TRADE THOMAS, KEEP RASK
Pretty obvious. Loyal readers know how much I love Thomas. And I like Rask, just hate the reactionary fans who fell in love with him after 20 games. Rask still has holes and flaws. I for one, do not like his collapsing style. But he's cheap, he's young, and he might be the most valuable player in the NHL because of those factors.
What do the B's get for Thomas? Probably not much. His contract is heavy, he's not in his prime, everyone knows the Bruins have to trade him.
III. NEW CAPTAIN
I love Zdeno Chara. He's my favorite non-German Bruin. But he's not a Captain. I think that "C" on his chest weighs him down. He expressed being "nervous," during the Philly series. He's an excellent player, and deserves an "A," and is a great leader-by-example. But I think he'd be a better leader if he were demoted.
IV. D-FENSE! D-FENSE!
The Bruins have an excellent stack of defensemen. Chara, Wideman, Hunwick and Ference are under contract. They need to retain Seidenberg, and try to keep Boychuk. Chara-Seidenberg, then Wideman-Boychuk, then Hunwick-Ference. If you can trade Ference and keep Stuart, even better. That's 6 excellent D-men, 5 of whom can skate on the power play, and 4 of whom would are excellent penalty killers (5 if Stuart is retained). They all get involved in the offense when possible, and they all help out Rask.
V. BILLY G.
I want Bill Guerin. He'll turn 40 in November. But he scored 21 goals for Pittsburgh last season, 11 on the power play. He's experienced, and a leader. He's won the Cup twice, and has 140 playoff games under his belt. He could be worthy of a "C" on his chest. He could be got for a $2.2 million, 1 year deal. That's less than what Blake Wheeler was paid this season, and Guerin certainly brings much more than Wheeler.
VI. ILYA OR NOT ILYA?
Ilya Kovalchuk is the prize jewel free agent of this off-season. Only 27 years old and he's already scored 338 times. At 6' 2" and 230 pounds, he's a big guy who can skate and finish. He's Phil Kessel with balls. But he won't be cheap. He'll be contested and bid on like a date with Jessica Alba on eBay. And he's likely out of the Bruins' price range.
VII. SO WHO DO WE BUY?
The other top free agent is Patrick Marleau. Unless the Bruins trade a center, Marleau doesn't help them much. Although he's a sick player. 44 goals for the Sharks this season. Again, he wouldn't come cheap, and the Bruins might have 5 centers as it is. Could Savard play wing?
There are a lot of solid types available. These guys can be gotten at fair value, and can be solid contributors. To be honest, I think a reasonable goal for the Bruins would be to assemble 2 solid lines of scorers, and combine them with 2 checking lines that will rarely score, but maintain possession of the puck.
One name on the free agent list that jumped out was Paul Kariya. The winger will be 36 during the season, and he only scored 18 goals last year, but he has experience and can find the net.
Alexander Frolov is a more appealing option. He's perennially around the 20 goal mark (averaged 24 per season over the last 7), and he's only 28.
The Bruins might also consider getting aggressive and tendering an offer sheet to restricted free agent Chris Stewart. The 22 year old scored 28 times last year, and has ridiculous upside. But extracting him from Colorado will be near impossible.
VIII. IF->THEN
If the Bruins get Kovalchuk, they can't afford to re-sign anybody significant. And it might actually be worth it. A front-line of Kovalchuk, Savard, and X would be impressive. But let's be realistic. The more likely scenario will be that the Bruins retain their defensemen, and their grinding forwards like Sobotka. Wheeler might be let go, as might Satan and Recchi. Some modest acquisitions like Guerin and Kariya/Frolov could fill in the gaps. And then you just hope that Ryder and Lucic find their 2008-09 form.
IX. BRIDGE SEASON
The Bruins have 4 top 50 draft picks. They'll be freed of Chara's contract after next season, same with Bergeron's $4.75M salary, Ryder's $4M. They'll have unbelievable flexibility. So I actually don't mind going after Kovalchuk and foresaking any depth for the 2010-11 season. In 2011-12, it might be all worth it, when cap space and a new generation of young players can refill the depth.
It's difficult to suggest which course the Bruins should go. Either take a chance that the draft will work out in the future and foresake yourself now (which might mean Chiarelli's job), or try to build on what the Bruins have. And this team has advanced to the 2nd round of the playoffs two straight seasons. So they can't be doing everything wrong.
Frankly, I'm a gambler. I say trade some talent, make enough space for Kovalchuk. Get him, probably fail in the playoffs again, then build a new team around him and Rask. Go big or go home. But that's probably not even possible. So build a solid team of decent forwards, build some depth at the position, hope you can have multiple threats to score 3 goals, while Rask and the defense limits your opponent.

Favre Is Coming Back
I know, I know, I hate writing Favre posts, but news came out that Favre has had (or is about to have) surgery on his ankle. This is an obvious sign that he is returning, and the players in the Vikings locker room seem to agree. I knew there was no way he was not coming back. I hate him, and I hope that the Packers actually kill him on the field. Still, why not come back? He just had one of his better seasons. His team is in great shape to make another run, and you get to play in a dome. Anyways, unless he retires this is my last Brett Favre rumor post.

Pittsburgh Gets 2011 Winter Classic
Heinz Field will host the 2011 Winter Classic, as the 2009 Stanley Cup Champion Penguins will host perennial powerhouse/chokers: the Washington Capitals. That's not surprising, but it does pose a few questions.
Has the NHL beaten the Crosby vs. Ovechkin horse to death? I mean one guy is as boring as wallpaper samples, and the other guy can barely speak English. The NHL has been trying to prop up this "rivalry," but the two teams play in different divisions, and have only played one forgettable postseason series against each other. How can you have a rivalry when you meet each other only 4 times out of 80 each season?
Then there's another question. Why not New York/New Jersey. Why can't the Devils host the Rangers in what would be a media extravaganza? Those teams are rivals, and it'd get as much media attention as anything in Western PA could. Also consider the fact that the Penguins have already played in a Winter Classic (they'd be the first to play in 2) in Buffalo, which was essentially a showcase for Crosby.
I don't have any major beefs with Pittsburgh vs. Washington in Pittsburgh for the 2011 Winter Classic. So long as the Penguins don't play in another Classic for some time.
And if the NHL wants to build rivalries, as they seemingly do with this move, then maybe they should eliminate the purposeless teams like Nashville, Tampa Bay, Florida, Phoenix, Columbus, the Islanders, Nashville.

Stanley Cup Finals Preview
A tale of two cities, of two teams, of two historic franchises long overdue for some silverware. The Blackhawks rode the high road to get here, winning 52 games, claiming the 2nd seed in the West, and going 12-4 in the playoffs, rolling through their competition. The Flyers, took the low road. They squeezed in on the last day of the season by the slimmest of margins: a shootout goal. They're 12-5 in the playoffs, but were once on the brink, down 0-3 to the Bruins, before surging back, then thumping Montreal.
The Blackhawks haven't won the Cup since 1961. The Flyers since '75.
Philly's playoff run has been, in a word: compelling. They lose Jeff Carter, but are able to beat Brodeur and the Devils in 5 games. They fall behind Boston 3-0, even losing their goalie, then comeback and win the series in the Bruins' ice. Then they face the giant slayers from Montreal, who could beat Washington and Pittsburgh, bet couldn't handle the Flyers. Not even close.
But I'll burst your bubble, Philly. The playoffs are about weaknesses more than they're about strengths. The Flyers have a balanced offense (10th in scoring) with multiple threats (7 players with 4+ goals this postseason). They also boast 4 stalwart defenseman, including the guy with a triathlete's endurance: Chris Pronger. Where's the weakness? Goaltending. Despite their solid defense, the Flyers were 15th in goals allowed this season.
But in the playoffs they have the best GAA, an impressive 2.12! Have Leighton and Boucher stepped up in the postseason? Yes. But that's not the total story. Certainly both have been solid, but they've also benefited from their opponents' lack of offensive prowess.
The Devils were 19th in the NHL in goals scored. The Canadiens 23rd. The Bruins 29th. The Devils had Kovalchuk and Parise. The Bruins' offense was spearheaded by a 42 year old in Mark Recchi and a scrap-heap acquisition in Miroslav Satan. The Canadiens had Mike Cammalleri, and nothing else.
Chicago had the 3rd best offense in the NHL's regular season, averaged 3.31 goals per game in the post-season thus far (behind only Vancouver and Detroit).
They get offense from multiple players, just like Philadelphia. Six Blackhawks have 4+ postseason goals. Six Blackhawks had 20+ regular season goals.
Moreover, Chicago will be playing with home ice advantage. Philadelphia was 17-21-3 on the road during the regular season, and 5-4 during the playoffs. Chicago was 29-8-4 at home this season. But they've actually been better on the road in the postseason, with a spectacular 7-1 record away from Chicago.
Now what's Chicago's weakness? It might just be goaltending too. Antti Niemi's had an impressive 2.33 GAA in the postseason, but his SV% is much less staggering, at .921, it's 5th among playoff goalies with 4+ starts.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that there will be goals. Both teams have good offenses and exploitable goalies. Chicago's power-play wasn't very good in the regular season (17.7%), but it's been decent in the postseason (22.6%). Then again, both teams are very good penalty killers. (85.0% for Chicago and 83.0% for Philly in the regular season, 86.6% and 87% for them, respectively, in the playoffs).
So who has the edge? Chicago. While Philadelphia's Top-4 D-men have been outstanding this postseason, they've yet to face a team that can roll 2 to 3 good scoring lines. Moreover, Chicago can keep possession of the puck, wearing out those 4 defensemen.
My gut wants to say Chicago in 5. But I'll temper that with some pessimism and say Chicago in 6.
CONN SMYTHE WATCH:
Antti Niemi, G, CHI - 2.33 GAA, .921 SV%, 2 shutouts
Michael Leighton, G, PHI - 1.45 GAA, .948 SV%, 3 shutouts, 6-1 record
Jonathan Toews, C, CHI - 7 goals, 19 assists, +4, 3 GWG
Mike Richards, C, PHI - 6 goals, 15 assists, +6
Patrick Kane, RW, CHI - 7 goals, 13 assists
Danny Briere, C, PHI - 9 goals, 9 assists, +4, 4 GWG
Claude Giroux, RW, PHI - 8 goals, 9 assists, +10
Patrick Sharp, C, CHI - 7 goals, 9 assists
Chris Pronger, D, PHI - 4 G, 10 A, 26 hits, 51 blocks, like 30:00 per game
Brent Seabrook, D, CHI - 3 G, 6 A, +8, 60 hits, 41 blocks
Dustin Byfuglien, RW, CHI - 8 G, 2 A, 4 GWG, 56 hits

Final Scene Of LOST
I swear this will be my last LOST post ever, but I had to clear something up for everyone. This will be a spoiler, so if you have been living under a rock please don't read any further.
A lot of people have made a big deal of the ending scene from LOST (the pic above). People seem to think that this was the writers way of telling everyone that they died in the original crash even though Jack's dad blatantly said that everything on the island that happened was real. Anyways, this disproves that theory...
So, raise your hand if you’ve spent the past three days obsessing over what was purgatory, what was real-life, for the past six years on Lost. No doubt, for many of you, a big part of your understanding has included an interpretation of the series’ final scenes of plane wreckage strewn across an empty beach, nothing but the white noise of crashing waves cutting through the deadly silence. Well, turns out ABC just threw those final scenes in there as a “visual aid,” and they didn’t actually have anything to do with the show’s plot. ABC told the LA Times that the network – and not executive producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse — added those shots of the beach simply to soften the transition from the emotional ending of the series finale to the 11 p.m. news and didn’t realize that viewers who had been obsessing over every detail of every scene of every episode might have considered the series’ final images as having some meaning. “”The images shown during the end credits of the Lost finale, which included shots of Oceanic 815 on a deserted beach, were not part of the final story but were a visual aid to allow the viewer to decompress before heading into the news,” an ABC spokesperson told the Times.
I am just glad they cleared that up, because I really would've hated if everything over the last 6 season (on the island) was just them in purgatory or something like that.
Why Not?

Raiders v. Russell
Why do I feel like this trivial case will somehow find its way to the Supreme Court?
The Raiders want about $9.55 million from JaMarcus Russell, money that they claim was an advance for the 2011-12 seasons.
I kind of want to side with Russell here. Why the hell would the Raiders advance him some salary? Why would any NFL team advance anyone their salary? I kind of struggle to believe the Raiders actually did this at all. It seems like a senile maneuver by an ancient and decrepit owner who doesn't remember when and why he paid JaMarcus Russell anything. Who is that guy? What team do I own?
The Raiders made a mistake drafting Russell, and they've paid for it. But if they were dumb enough to advance him nearly $10 million in salary, I think they should have to pay for that, too.
Could you imagine the Patriots, or any other conscientiously run team fronting a mediocre, likely-to-be-cut play any salary? The Autumn Wind is a lawyer, filing suits just for fun...

Royals 4, Red Sox 3
Well we've all seen flashes of brilliance from Daisuke. And we've all seen the kind of bizarre performance he staged last night. Seriously, why does anyone swing at any pitch from this guy?
Matsuzaka walked 8 batters in 4.2 innings. He faced 24 batters, and walked a third of them. He threw 112 pitches, only 60 strikes and 52 balls. But hey, he only allowed 2 singles and no other hits.
The shortness of the outing brought in Joe Nelson, whose very entrance in a game diminishes the Sox' chance of winning by about 40%. I'm just guessing at that figure, but I dare anyone to prove me wrong.
The offense was equally inept. Bill Hall hit a solo shot in the 5th. JD Drew knocked in a run with a double in the 6th. Beltre had an RBI single back in the 4th. But the Sox hardly got any baserunners against the great Brian Bannister, then the vaunted Royals' bullpen. In fact, the KC bullpen pitched 3 perfect innings of relief.
It's difficult to be negative and pessimistic after what the Sox did in Tampa Bay and Philadelphia. But this was a vintage Daisuke disappointer. Then the bullpen couldn't keep the deficit stable. And the offense didn't do enough to win, against subpar pitching.
Tim Wakefield opposes Kyle Davies tonight.

Royals @ Red Sox Preview
The Red Sox have certainly turned things around, and are now back in the playoff race. They now have a 4 game series against the Royals at home, and they need to take advantage if they want to keep climbing the AL East standings.
Tonight we will see Dice-K vs. Brian Bannister. Matsuzaka has allowed five or more runs 3 times since coming off the disabled list, but his other 2 outings have been nothing short of brilliant. The questions is whether or not he can be consistent. I have no faith in the Royals lineup, so I think Dice-K will have another good outing. The thing to watch is his fastball. If he is hitting between 90-92 then the is fine, if he is in the upper 80's then it could be a tough night.
Brian Bannister is a solid pitcher, but he is nothing special and the Red Sox have always taken advantage of him (he is 0-4 with a 5.87 ERA against them). He has been on a little bit of a hot streak going at least 6 innings in each of his last 3 starts, but the Sox should still be able to roll over this guy.
Sox win 7-3

NBA Rescinds 1 Technical From Perkins
The NBA has rescinded one technical assessed to Kendrick Perkins and he will play in Friday's Game 6. This is great news, but they really should've rescinded both. Now if Perkins get 1 more technical foul he will be suspended for a game. He is really going to need to watch his temper, and hopefully it doesn't affect his defense.
Still, with Wallace and Big Baby hurting the Celtics could not lose Perkins. I feel a lot better about game 6 with Perkins out there against Howard.
But seriously the NBA has to sit down after this year and talk about it's rules. It is just fucking silly. I don't even understand what is and isn't a foul anymore, and they need to stop handing out technicals like they are going out of style. A game should be decided by the players not the refs. It is getting to the point where it is tough to watch.
Anyways, at least that is some good news today.
***UPDATE***
the NBA also upgraded Paul Pierce's foul on J.J. Redick in the fourth quarter was upgraded to a Flagrant 1 after Pierce shoved Redick chasing a loose ball.

More Trouble For Ellsbury
Ellsbury just can't catch a break lately. He was on the DL for fractured ribs, and now he has inflammation in roughly the same area.
"It was kind of where I had my previous injury," Ellsbury said. "I don’t know if it was kind of lingering there and I didn’t really know about it, but I’ll know more once we get back to Boston and I’ll talk to the doctors up there. Hopefully it’s something minor."
I have a feeling he is heading back to the DL, which is really too bad, because Boston could use his speed in the lineup. The good news is that the Sox are rolling right now, and maybe they can get by without him for the time being. The outfield should be more solid with Cameron out there, at least defensively.
What sucks is that it looks like the Red Sox misdiagnosed the injury...
"[The pain] is along the same ribs that cracked," Ellsbury told ESPN.com after the game. "All the ribs are moving, so it can affect the back ribs as well, where it hits the front of the spine. So you not only feel the impact at the direct place where you were hit, but the back side, too, along the band. I felt that originally, but I hadn't felt it again until now."
Added Ellsbury about the Sox' treatment: "I think they downplay it because they misdiagnosed it. They said you treat it all the same way. Remember that comment? How do you treat a bruise the same as a break?"
That doesn't sound good. We will keep you posted when we hear more...

Latest On Big Baby
After receiving an elbow to the mouth by Dwight Howard, Glen Davis suffered a concussion and had to leave Game 4 in the third quarter. He spoke briefly with reporters after the game and said he'll play in Game 5 on Friday.
"Point blank, I ain't speaking. I'm all right. I'll be back next game," Davis told the Boston Herald. "That's all you need to print."
Shelden Williams will be moved up into the rotation if Davis can't play in Game 5.
I really don't know what to believe at this point. I mean if he had a concussion I would think he would be out at least for next game, but Davis seems confident that he'll be out there. The Celtics really need him to play. Perkins could be suspended, Wallace is having back spasms, and sorry but I really don't want to see Shelden Williams covering Dwight Howard. But at least Doc Rivers still has a sense of humor about all this...
"I don't know what kind of test they're going to do with Davis because he's a little delirious half the time anyway, so I don't know how he's going to pass a test," head coach Doc Rivers said with a laugh. "I'm worried about that. But I guess he's going to have to do something for them to clear him."
I really don't think Doc likes Big Baby at all.

HAHAHA, You're A Woman
"The code of conduct for cheerleaders at Mesa Red Mountain High School clearly states that the use of alcohol will result in immediate expulsion from the team.
So when Hosac, 17, was cited for underage drinking at a party near Four Peaks on April 2, she knew the consequences would be severe. Sure enough, the junior was not allowed to try out for the 2010-11 spirit line.
What angers Hosac and her mother, Holly Walter, however, is that several other Red Mountain students - some of them athletes - also were given citations for underage drinking, and their punishments weren't nearly as severe as Hosac's (AZcentral.com)."
I read on and the guys just had to run laps. Fucking hilarious, you know why? Because cheerleading is stupid and nothing good comes from it, unless they are half naked. Sorry ladies, but cheerleading isn't a sport, it is a cheering section of a sport. So, yea I don't care, because those real athletes probably mean a lot more to their team then these cheerleaders meant to their little pep squad.

Best Sixth Man in the Game? Best Sixth Man in the Game
At what point does Stan Van Gundy tell Vince Carter to take a night off? He is like sand on the skates of the Orlando Magic offense. Hasn't looked comfortable all season but for a few game streaks here and there and has been pretty awful during the playoffs. His bad play was masked by the weak first and second round opponents however it has certainly been exposed in the Eastern Conference Finals.
Now, as the Magic continue to push the Celtics into the record books (first NBA team to blow a 3-0 series lead, in fact this is the first C's team to need a game 6 after going up 3-0 so they are already in the record book for that) the Magic continue to rely on Vince's backup, former Duke stud, JJ Redick. Not only is he playing better than Carter, he might be playing better than anybody on his team outside Dwight Howard and, in games 4 and 5, Jameer Nelson.
Redick's solid play is being rewarded with 25-30 minutes per game and constant stream of compliments from Marc Jackson and Jeff Van Gundy. Many will see the box score and say so what, the guy is averaging 10 points a game, a handful of rebounds and he's turning it over 3 or 4 times. To them I say you are missing the point. Check out JJ's plus/minus. It's OVER 20. Until game 5, he was the only Magic player with a +/- in positive territory. The minute he touched the floor last night the Magic surged to an 8 point lead, eventually pushing it to 11 or 12. The C's make a run to start the 2nd half, guess who's not on the floor? That's right, #7.
This isn't just a solid contribution from a guy told he would never get regular minutes in the NBA. A guy who couldn't play D, was too soft to play the wing, too slow to guard the 2. A guy who couldn't create his own shot, couldn't drive the lane. No this is a career defining performance reframing the way any intelligent fan thinks of JJ Redick from now through the rest of his career.
I would like to say it's something new but it's not. We saw this last year when JJ's limited minutes kept Kobe in check during the Finals. I would even go so far as to say the only thing he was given credit for, his ability to knock down a 3 from anywhere on the court, has actually regressed some since his glory days as a Blue Devil. Instead, it is his defense, ball movement and pass first team work that makes up the bulk of his game today. Ask Ray Allen how fun it has been when JJ's been on him.
So when the Magic come back and send the C's into an imfamy shared with the Bruins and Yankees, Orlando fans can thank their lucky stars on the continued maturation, professionalism and flight to stardom of one JJ Redick.
Also, Dwight Howard being able to swing his elbows with reckless abandon helps too.
Who Should the Bruins Trade?
Well the obvious answer to that is Tim Thomas. He's expendable. The Bruins have a cheap, young goalie in Tuukka Rask. This is a lay-up. The Bruins need to trade Thomas for just about anything, even if it's below fair value. Other teams know the B's want to trade him, and he has a deal that will last until 2013.
As much as I love him, it would be really liberating to trade Chara, freeing up $7.5 million in cap space. But that makes him difficult to trade. Fortunately, this upcoming season will be the last year on that deal. He's a phenomenal defenseman, a Norris candidate every season, but that's too much money to spend on an individual player who isn't scoring 40 goals a year.
Do I want to get rid of Marc Savard? No. Is he tradeable? Yes! He doesn't make much money, and the Bruins have depth at center. The B's have a lot of playmaking forwards, but very few play-FINISHING forwards. Savard's an assist guy on a team devoid of goal scorers. What's the point? If the price is right, Savard is tradeable.
In fact, EVERYONE is tradeable, except Rask. It's unimaginable that any team could offer enough to get Rask, a young, successful goalie making $1.25 million. 15 Bruins made more than that this season.
I would love to see Michael Ryder traded. He's just awful. The two or three sparks of brilliance only illuminate his inconsistency. He gets $4 million. He's a member of Claude's Think Tank. The puck finds his stick, and he always tries to settle it. It could be a perfect pass or rebound, and he'll take a second to give it a think. Meanwhile, the goalie's moved into position and opposing defensemen have honed in on the puck.
The Bruins should take just about anything to dump Ryder.
So in summation, everyone but Rask can be traded. Everyone but Thomas might have to stay. Thomas has to go. Rask has to stay. Other than that, move based on what you can get.
This team needs top to bottom change, so don't be afraid to make as many deals as you can.

Red Sox 6, Rays 2
Normally ascending to 3rd place is hardly something to be be proud of. But to do it by sweeping the Tampa Bay Rays on the road changes things. The Sox got yet another Quality Start as John Lackey went 6.1, allowing only 2 runs despite the 8 hits and 4 walks he allowed. He held the Rays to 1/14 with runners in scoring position.
He was helped by a Sox offense which surprisingly knocked around Matt Garza. Beltre hit 2 homers, and Ortiz hit his 10th of the season. He hit his 10th of last season on July 8th. Beltre was 4 for 6. He also had a triple, and knocked in 6 runs.
While Jason Varitek's offensive production has expectedly dissipated (he's hitting .250 in May), it's probably not coincidental that he's been a consistent presence behind the plate, and the starting pitchers have excelled. I'll reluctantly give him half of an assist for the recent quality of starting pitchers. But in the end, pitchers still have to pitch.
Sox now sit in 3rd, 3 games behind New York in the loss column, and 6 behind TB. But they host the 19-28 Royals for 4, then the barely above .500 Athletics, then they play the abysmal Orioles. So this is a good time to compile some wins and chip away at some deficits.
Matsuzaka vs. Brian Bannister tonight.

Magic 113 Celtics 92
Wow. It is really tough to even write about this game. This series could simply be over if NBA referees weren't the worst officiating in all of sports. Last night, the refs were throwing technicals around like they were going out of style. Perkins got his first when he tried to help Paul Pierce off the court, his hand slipped, and inadvertently hit Howard. Then he gets his 2nd when he didn't like a call, but was walking away from the ref. That got him kicked out, so the Celtics had to play the entire 2nd half without their starting center.
Things only got worse. Big Baby was knocked out of the game when Howard (not on purpose) and gave him a concussion. Then Daniels went down with a concussion (still have no idea how he got hurt). It was just one of those games, the problem is that Magic are back in this series.
I don't want to take too much away from the Magic, but the Celtics were able to hang around until the last 10 mins of the game even with everything that had gone wrong. Howard had a big game with 21 point, 10 boards, but it was the 5 blocks that really set the tone in the game.
Anyways, I still think the Celtics can close this out. They have to come out pissed next game, and I would really like to see more from Garnett (looked old last night).
We will have updates on Big Baby, Daniels, and whether or not Perkins is going to be suspended hopefully later in the day...

Boston at Orlando, Game 5
The Celts missed out on their chance to close it out in a sweep, with a tough OT loss on Monday night. They were probably all just concerned with the series finale of 24, like I was. What's gonna happen to the world now that the Ruskis most likely tracked down Jack Bauer and killed him?! Yikes!
Anyway, that's neither here nor there. This series is all but over. I have no fears about believing that Boston will close this one out in 5. I don't think that I am jinxing them or anything like that. I'm just confident. To me, they've been the best team in these playoffs. Rondo had a very lackluster performance in game 4, and like Doc said afterward, everyone was kind of trying to win it by themselves. They need to get back to that team play that looks so unbeatable when they're on.
Here's how I see it playing out:
I think Dwight Howard will probably have a great game, but the problem with your center having a great game is that it doesn't really help anyone else play better - not offensively anyway. He might open up shots on the perimeter, but I think the C's are actually content letting him have his 25-30 points and sticking with the shooters on the outside. Unlike most teams, Boston has 4 big guys to throw at him, and basically go 1-on-1 with Howard. (Also 24 fouls!) He was huge in game 3 and that game wasn't even close!
Rashard Lewis is nowhere to be found, and Nelson quite simply can't hang with Rondo when he plays like he has been (minus game 4).
Ron Jeremy, I mean Stan Van Gundy, is the most annoying coach in the NBA. Maybe some people enjoy his rhetoric and sense of humor, and look at me post-game interviews, but I find them nauseating. And I think he and his staff have been pretty well shown up so far in this series by Doc and company. That should continue and then we should get some real stupid sound bites after the game (and series). Like Shaq once said, the guy folds when pressure is the highest. You ever watch him during time-outs. He's all screaming and yelling, and what are his players doing? Watching dancers and t-shirt throwers, etc. I know most NBA timeouts are useless other than rest, but this guy really seems to accomplish nothing.
The lockdown D will show up again, containing the Orlando guards and forwards, producing TO's and easy buckets. Look for lots of fast-breaks ended by pull-up treys from Ray Ray and Pierce spotting up in the corners.
Prediction
Celts 93 - Magic 81
Celtics win series 4-1
Tommy Award - Paul Pierce
Red Sox @ Rays Preview
The Red Sox could finally turn the tables on the Rays after that ugly sweep at Fenway earlier in the year. The problem is they have to go through Matt Garza, and that is not something that has been easy for the Red Sox. Garza is 6-2 with a 2.92 ERA against the Sox in his career. Garza has never lost to the Red Sox at home, and his dominance continued in Boston on April 18, when he gave up 4 hits in 8 scoreless innings of a 7-1 win. He also was sharp Friday at Houston, pitching an 8 inning complete game in Tampa Bay's 2-1 loss. So, yea he could be a problem
The Sox counter with Lackey, who has been anything but stellar lately. Last time out Lackey continued to struggle, walking a season high 5 and allowing 4 runs in 5 innings of a 5-1 loss to the Phillies. Lackey also got rocked for 8 runs in 3 1/3 innings in a loss earlier in the season against the Rays.
Boston will also be playing without V-Mart. Yet, still I think the Sox are going to win. Lackey is due for a good game, and hopefully the Sox can figure out Matt Garza.
Sox win 7-5
Player of the Game: Beltre
Game starts 7:10pm on NESN.
Give It Up Walpole
Walpole High School used to use the Confederate Flag as it own. Most of that ended in 1994, when school officials declared the flag an inappropriate symbol and eliminated it as an unofficial team emblem. Yet, one family that neighbors the school still has that flag up. I guess it pisses off a lot of people who go to the game.
Listen, the guy has a right to have that flag up in his yard, but people should be pissed about this. That flag represents the lowest point for American history, it also represents racism, bigotry. I know some say it is history, and you could make an argument there, except this is fucking Massachusetts. It doesn't get much more North then that. I just think this is fucking stupid, I hate the fucking South, you fucking lost, burn all those flags and stop being douche bags.
NFL Not Expanding New OT Rule To Regular Season
Commissioner Roger Goodell said Tuesday the issue was tabled during owner meetings in the Dallas area two months after owners voted to remove part of the sudden-death component from overtime in the playoffs. Under the new system, a team that loses the coin flip and immediately gives up a field goal will have a chance to either tie or win the game.
I am actually fine with this. I am just happy they changed it for the playoffs, because it is stupid for a team's season to end, because the other team was the first to kick a field goal. Overtimes will be a lot more intense, and I am glad that it won't all be decided by a kicker, since teams will have a chance to win/tie. Anyways, eventually I think they will bring this same rule to the regular season, since the NFL regular season actually mean a lot, unlike the NBA/NHL.
V-Mart Out Again
Victor Martinez said on Tuesday night that he was still feeling al ot of pain in his injured toe and did not think he would play on Wednesday night against the Rays. He would once again be replaced by Jason Varitek.
This is really too bad, because V-Mart had been hitting the cover off the ball last week. He hadn't been all that impressive this season until right before he got hurt. Hopefully he will still be on fire when he returns, but the good news is that Tek has been playing well this year and should be fine, if he is needed for the next couple of games.
The Sox just need to get healthy, their pitching is getting it going and if this lineup can get Cameron, Ellsbury, and V-Mart going they are going to be all set. The Sox are starting to become a dangerous team, but the question remains whether or not they started to get it going to late?

If You Went To College You're Gonna Die
"CASH-strapped university students struggling to get by on baked beans and two-minute noodles and are at greater risk of developing chronic diseases, according to a new Australian study.
Dr Gallegos said vulnerable groups tended to eat more fast foods or energy-dense foods, like take-aways, as these were often viewed as more affordable and filling.
She said low income groups who found it difficult to eat a healthy, balanced diet were more likely to be either overweight or underweight, and were at a greater risk of chronic diseases like diabetes, cancer and heart disease (couriermail.com)."
Is this really shocking to anyone. Nothing about college is healthy. You don't sleep, you drink too much, you experiment, you eat a lot of easy mac and ramen noodles, so of course none of that is good. The way I see it, its like your body going through some kind of war, but everyone (for the most part) gets through it, plus what doesn't cause cancer these days?

Erin Andrews Is A Fraud
I hate Erin Andrews. Sure she's hot but like I've been screaming for months that the whole peep hole incident was a set up to make her more famous. Now she has a chance to win dancing with the stars or already won it, I don't know. But what she does on this show is much more suggestive than the peep hole shots. She claimed that the peep hole guy "ruined her life" and no one will take her seriously, but then she goes on DWTS and basically is getting dry fucked. That tape has got you more fame than you could ever have made by "hard work". She's a phony and I hope she gets slapped.
What Should the Bruins Do About Their Own Free Agents?
Here are the soon-to-be free agents currently on the Bruins roster:
Unrestricted:
Mark Recchi, RW
Steve Begin, C
Miroslav Satan, RW
Shawn Thornton, LW
Dennis Seidenberg, D
Johnny Boychuk, D
Restricted:
Blake Wheeler, RW
Daniel Paille, LW
Vladimir Sobotka, C
Mark Stuart, D
Hindsight is 20/20, but the Bruins only signed Boychuk to a 1 year deal after he won the Eddie Shore Award in AHL Providence. The B's seem to have a habit of re-signing guys at their peak (Thomas, Wideman, Krejci, Savard, Lucic). They struggle to buy low.
The B's are negotiating with Seidenberg, which I think is very wise. Not only is he German, but he's a very solid defenseman. He's only 29, he takes care of the puck, he blocks shots, he can play the power play and penalty kill. As a partner for Zdeno Chara, he's perfect.
Boychuck is another guy I really want the Bruins to keep. But his price might go too high. I'm sure he wants to stay in Boston, where defensive hockey is really important, and where he's allowed to get involved in the offensive game. He's got a great shot for a defenseman, although he frequently takes too many shots without an adequate shooting lane.
As much as his postseason exploits endeared him to Bruins fans, they also may have garnered the attentions of too many GMs. I think his price might prove to be too high. The Bruins have depth at this position, and don't need to overpay to keep Boychuk.
Miroslav Satan will turn 37 in October. He could score 20 goals (had 9 in 38 games with the Bruins), and he dazzled the fans in the playoffs. But he's not a complete player. His finish isn't good or consistent enough to pay him like a pure scorer. I'd rather get a grinding forward for a cheaper price. Then again, if he wants to play for $700,000 again, then he's worth it.
Recchi is old. And as much as I love him, can he endure a long postseason? I don't think so. He'll show sparks, but I think his age caught up to him at the end of the Philly series, when he disappeared from the checking game. Again, keep him only if he accepts a cheap contract.
Begin is a nice 4th line center. A grinder, a checker, a guy who can help keep the puck in the offensive zone. You can move him to the wings, though. Put him on a line with Sobotka and Thornton, and that's terrifying for the opposition to face. He's also an adept penalty killer.
You can retain Shawn Thornton for low money. He's not just a fighter. He's a good checker, and is capable of handling the puck with modest skill. Still, he's the team's fists, and was the only guy who showed in heart in the Matt Cooke game. Keep him as a 4th line winger getting less than 10 minutes of ice-time.
Blake Wheeler seems like a neverending project. He has no identity as a player. He doesn't have the puck skills or reflexes to be a scorer. He doesn't play with the size or moxy of a grinder. I think you could get the same kind of production from a much cheaper player.
Daniel Paille was an emergency acquisition last year, but he's completely useless on offense. Write a "thank you note," and cut him loose.
I wish the Bruins had given Mark Stuart a contract extension instead of Andrew Ference. Stuart gets crazy eyes, he gets involved on offense, and he's aggressive on defense. What happens with Seidenberg and Boychuk will determine what should happen to Stuart. If those two guys stay, Stuart is very expendable. If neither sign, he becomes indispensable.

Jets/ Giants Win Superbowl Bid in 2014
The Jets/ Giants won a Superbowl bid for 2014 and it's biggest supporter is Robert Craft. There will be a cold Superbowl. blah, blah, blah.
Am I the only one that thinks having a Superbowl outdoors is stupid? I know I'm going to get killed for this but c'mon, outdoors, in February, really? Seems only bad things could happen from that. One all fans will say, "Man, it would be wicked cool to play in the cold, the unpredictable elements will bring the game back to what it was!" Fuck that. If I went to the Superbowl and was sitting in -20 degrees and if the score at any point was more than a 10 point lead I would be pissed. I wouldn't want to be there, I would be getting hypothermia, and consider pissing myself to stay warm. It would suck. And if a team loses due to a fumble or something else that the weather would play a hand in, I don't want to hear excuses. I don't want to hear, "Well the Patriots would have won, but the weather screwed them out of a chance to win." All this does is pretty much guarantee whoever has the better offensive line and run game a Superbowl ring and that's stupid. I like the way it is in dome's it's the most equal playing field possible (If someone writes a comment saying it's an unfair advantage for teams who play in a dome at home compared to teams who don't, I'll punch you.)
But then again people have said dumber things like keeping Fenway around and the old garden was better than the new garden.
115 Suns, 106 Lakers
Well ladies and gents, it looks like we got ourselves a series. If the Celtics can closeout the series tonight then it will mean they can get a little rest. But the Suns did what they were supposed to do by winning their home games. If they can steal one on the road who knows what will happen. I'll tell you what, I thought the Suns weren't going to win a game this series so this is all very surprising to me.
This game has to go to the Suns bench who outscored their Laker counterparts 54 to 20. Again, Kobe Bryant had a great game with 38 points and 10 assists but that all goes to waste with them losing the game.
Either way if these two teams keep beating each other up it will greatly benefit the Celtics who are also getting beat up in the Magic series.
Red Sox 2, Rays 0
Talk all you want about infield defense, UZR, and all that mumbo jumbo. What truly prevents runs is good pitching. And that's what the Red Sox have gotten the last few days. They've beaten two very good teams on the road because of excellent starts from everyone in their rotation except John Lackey, who'll pitch tonight.
Maybe the Rays aren't a .700 team. That's kind of obvious, as a .700 winning percentage would result in a 113 win season, and as good as Tampa Bay is, they're not 113 wins good. But the Rays haven't really played anyone. 6 games against Baltimore, 6 against Seattle, 5 against Oakland, 4 against KC, 3 against the White Sox, 3 against Houston, 3 against the Angels, 3 against Toronto.
I still don't think the Sox will catch the Rays in the East. But maybe they'll catch the Yankees? The Sox are still in 4th, but only 1.5 behind the 2nd place Yankees.
Willy Aybar hit a single in the 4th. That would be Tampa Bay's only hit off Lester or anyone else. Although Lester did walk 5, and needed 111 pitches to go 6 innings, you can't do much better than that. Delcarmen, Bard, and Papelbon completed the shutout.
This was Lester's 5th Quality Start in his last 6 outings. He's allowed 7 earned runs in his last 7 starts (49.2 IP, 1.27 ERA). He's 4-0 in May. He's the Ace of the Sox staff. Or at the very least, he's The Rock. The Cornerstone.
David Ortiz will get some deserved publicity for his reemergence as an offensive force. His double knocked in both Sox runs in the 3rd. He's hitting .361 in May, and slugging .787 with 9 HR and 19 RBI.
I'm not optimistic about the excellent starts continuing, as Lackey goes tonight against Garza. But taking 2 in Tampa is huge. The Sox have played their last 7 games against 1st place teams, and are 6-1 in that stretch. That's impressive.

Red Sox @ Rays Preview
The Red Sox might be starting to get on a role, and the addition of Ellsbury and Cameron should only help. Tonight the Sox have Lester going against Shields. In Lester's last 6 outing he is 4-0 with a 1.65 ERA, racking up 49 strikeouts over 43 2-3 innings in that stretch. It isn't just Lester whose been enjoying success recently, as Boston starters have gone 5-1 with a 1.64 ERA in the club's last six games (all against division leaders).
But that might not be the only reason the Sox have looked better recently. Ortiz is finally starting to hit the ball, and it is amazing how much different the lineup looks when he is hitting well. He is going to need to today, as Boston will have to play without V-Mart who took a ball off his foot last night.
The Sox have done well against Shields (4-7 5.33 ERA, and I suspect it will be the same tonight.
Sox win 6-2
Rondo On The Cover Of Sports Illustrated
The NBA has been introduced to Rajon Rondo these playoffs, and now the world will know him now that he is on the cover of SI. I know a lot of people are going to flip out about the "SI curse", but I don't believe in that shit. I know Rondo didn't have his best game last night, but I am still not buying it since Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, and Paul Pierce appeared on the cover of the SI NBA preview issue that season in 2007 and ended up winning the Championship. Calm down Celtics fans, you are a much better team then the Bruins, and you will not have to deal with the same fate. Plus, how can a team with guys like Vince Carter and Rashard Lewis actually win anything?
Side note - Rondo is not the only local athlete on the cover. Can you spot the other one?

Going From Bad To Worse
It is an awful feeling when you are on a plane trying to sleep and the person behind you keeps kicking your seat. Well, it is even worse when you realize they are kicking your seat because the guy next to you is sexually assaulting you...
"A 63 year-old New Jersey man has been arrested for reaching under the blanket of a sleeping woman aboard a Continental flight and sexually abusing her.
Ramesh Advani was arrested by the FBI when Flight 98 from landed at Newark Liberty airport. The woman and two witnesses described a sickening encounter on the flight from Hong Kong.
Advani allegedly touched the woman's "genitalia, groin and inner thigh" all while he moved "napkins around inside of his pants," court papers said.
Two passengers witnessed the alleged sexual assault and kicked the woman's chair in an attempt to wake her up. Investigators would not say if the woman had taken sleeping pills or other medication for the international flight (NBC)."
Well first off this guy is ballsy. I mean there are a lot of people that will probably notice what you are doing. Next, what the fuck was this woman on that she didn't feel this dude diddling her, or the people behind her kicking her seat? Anyways, if Jenn Sterger was sitting next to me I would totally try this.
Stanley Cup Roundup: Day 41
That was fast and easy. After 10 of the previous 12 playoff series went 6 games or more, both Conference Finals were quick and painless.
PHILADELPHIA 4, MONTREAL 2 (Flyers win series 4-1)
Mike Richards had a goal and two assists. Jeff Carter scored twice. Montreal needed Halak to be miraculous in this series. He was human. A very good goaltending human, but still human. And Cammalleri finally cooled down, scoring only 1 goal, 0 assists, and was -5 in the series. And thank God. I couldn't stand to see Les Habitants celebrating. Hopefully a few dozen of them ended their lives last night.
So it's Philadelphia vs. Chicago. The NHL should be happy. There hasn't been a matchup between TV/hockey markets of this size since 1997 (Detroit/Philadelphia). Both teams are fast, get goals from multiple sources. There's not the star-power of an Ovechkin, or Crosby, but maybe this is the introduction of a new star. Patrick Kane perhaps? Mike Richards maybe?
We'll have a Stanley Cup Finals preview sometime this week. There's plenty of time. The Finals don't commence until Saturday.

Strasburg Finally Lets Up A Run
Strasburg, who had not allowed a run in winning his first three Triple-A starts for the Syracuse Chiefs, went five innings Monday night against the Toledo Mud Hens, allowing five hits and two runs, one earned. He left with the score tied at 2, but his team won 6-3. There is so much hype around this kid that you would think he is going to be the best pitcher ever. Well, I'm actually buying into the hype. I hope the Nationals are careful with him and don't rush him too much, but it does seem like he is MLB ready.
Most pitchers have very up and down years their first time in the majors, but this kid is going to pass right through that. I think if the Nationals brought him up now that he could get 12 wins. I know, crazy right? On the fucking Nationals, but Strasburg just is THAT good.

Hurricane Thibodeau Heading To New Orleans
The Hornets are looking for a new head coach and it looks as if Tom Thibodeau is going to be their man. The guy who got the Celtics focused on defense is going to be a giant loss if he leaves. Doc may be making the right calls during the game, but Thibs is the defensive mastermind behind it all.
This is all another reason why the Celtics need to win it this year, because they are going to need Thibs when it comes to Lakers (If we beat the Magic). He has changed the whole mindset (along with Doc Rivers) of the Boston Celtics and the Hornets got a steal with him being their guy. He also has been deserving of a head coaching job for years now and his name fits Louisiana so well too.

6 Red Sox, 1 Rays
I have to give the boy his credit. Clay Buchholz is the reason the Red Sox were able to weather the early storm. He has by far been the Sox best pitcher in this early season. Clay is now 6-3 with a 3 era. Here is the scoring summary:
Scoring Summary
BOS | TAM | |||
---|---|---|---|---|
2nd | D Ortiz homered to right (361 feet). | 1 | 0 | |
3rd | J Drew walked, D Pedroia scored, J Varitek to third, K Youkilis to second. | 2 | 0 | |
3rd | A Beltre reached on infield single to third, J Varitek scored, K Youkilis to third, J Drew to second. | 3 | 0 | |
3rd | J Hermida singled to left, K Youkilis scored, J Drew to third, A Beltre to second. | 4 | 0 | |
4th | K Youkilis homered to left (416 feet), J Varitek scored. | 6 | 0 | |
4th | C Pena homered to right (402 feet). | 6 | 1 |
The best thing about this game is that we are actually turning into somewhat of a good team. We beat the Rays which is a start, Ortiz is finally hitting, Ellsbury is finally back with Cameron right behind him and some of the pitchers are doing their job. If we could just kill Beckett and Scutaro everything will be alright.
On more thing. The Captain is stupid for mentioning the Tampa Fans. 1. Who gives a shit. 2. At least they don't have pink hats.
