This will be the last game against the Rays this year, and after last night's game that's probably a good thing. Clay Buchholz was going to start tonight on short rest if the Red Sox won last night, but Dice-K made short work of that, so now the Wake gets to pitch against Garza. As you may have guessed I don't have a good feeling about this.
Wakefield will be making his first start since Aug. 25, when he allowed 4 runs in 5 2/3 innings during a loss to Seattle. His last 11 appearances (four of them starts)have all come in Red Sox losses. The Wake has a 5.85 ERA in that span, which includes a loss at Tampa Bay in which he gave up 6 runs and walked 5 in 5 2/3 innings.
Garza has had a very nice year for the Rays going 14-7 with a 3.46 ERA. He's 3-0 in his last four starts and has a 1.32 ERA in six outings since the start of August.
You will see the Sox shutdown more and more guys over the next couple of weeks, and tonight could be an ugly repeat of last night.
Rays win 8-2
Player of the Game: Garza
Game starts at 7:10pm on NESN.
