The Answer To Now What?

DP has pointed out many of the fears that are running through Red Sox fans right now. Boston missed out on their big free agent signing, and now a lot of people are worried that the Yankees have passed them by. I don't believe so...

1. Yankees have a lot of questions of their own (i.e. How good is Joba?, Can Burnett hold up?, Can Posada catch?, Is Jeter going to continue his slide?, Can anyone be "clutch"?, How much longer can Rivera hold up? ect.)

2. Big free agent signings do not always equal championship. The Yankees have done this before, Damon, Giambi, A-Rod, and it hasn't seemed like that approach has worked well for from over the past 8 years. We shall see.

3. Red Sox seemed more focused on player development. Look at their team, most are home grown talent (Pedroia, Lester, Youk, ect), or player traded for with home grown talent (Beckett). The only real "free agent signings" were Dice-K and J.D. Drew.

4. With Tex going to the Yankees I think it means Tek is gone. The Sox will not be able to afford a big hole in their lineup. We reported earlier this week that Red Sox scouts were down in Texas checking out Salty, I expect a Buchholz for Slaty deal soon. Nolin Ryan apparently is in love with Buchholz.

So, I really don't see the Sox overreacting and going after the Adam Dunn, Derek Lowe's of the world. I would like to see them take a risk and sign Sheets or Smoltz, but that is unlikely. I think we will see a new catcher, and that's about it.
