The Big East Tourney kicked off today at MSG. This is the first time they have invited all 16 teams to participate so the BET will run 5 rounds through the Saturday championship game.
The early games featured two tourney long shots in Cincy and Georgetown. Both saw their seasons come to the crashing halt they were meant to. Cincy lost to DePaul. DePaul. The team that could not figure out how to win a conference game all year stumped the Bearcats in a game that was life or death. Sad.
As for Georgetown, if this isn't the loss that puts JT3 at the back of the unemployment line, they might as well give him tenure. He sucks. He can't recruit (another blue chip just backed out and committed to the 'Cuse, that outta sit well in DC) and he sure as shit can't win big games.
St John's is a pretty terrible team with a very limited offense yet they dominated the Hoyas. They killed them on the offensive boards, penetrated at will and forced one sloppy turnover after another. Georgetown couldn't even get the last second shot thing right, heaving one off the backboard and 8 rows out of bounce with 3 seconds left and a chance to tie it up.
In addition to seeing some upsets on the first big tournament day, this was a great pair of results for URI. Had either Cincy or Gtown made a run in the BET, that could have been one less at large bid for the Rams to steal. As is the Rams need a major run in their own tourney and some serious help in all the other conferences. It sure was nice to get a little of that on day 1.
