Papelbon Going To The Yankees?
"Though he's under contract until 2011, closer Jonathan Papelbon said Thursday he would be willing to sign anywhere, including with the rival Yankees, if he and the Red Sox cannot agree to a long-term deal. "Not only the Bronx, but anywhere, I think anywhere is a possibility," Papelbon said in a Sirius XM radio interview. "You always have to keep that in the back of your mind because you can't just be one-sided and think that, 'Oh I'm going to be in a Red Sox uniform my entire career.' Because nowadays that is very, very rare." Perhaps sensing that the comment might not go over well in Beantown, Papelbon added "There's no question I would love to stay in a Boston Red Sox uniform (ESPN)."
I said it before and I'll say it again, there is 0 chance that Papelbon will be in a Sox uniform after 2011. He is obviously trying to scare the Sox management into an extension, but it is not going to work. The Sox know his arm is hanging by a thread, and if they can get 2 more years out of him I think they would be happy about that. Still, I hate reading this kind of stuff. We all know it comes down to money in the end, but why say this now? Fans have been behind this guy from the beginning...why piss them off? Just thought it was stupid, but in the end it means nothing and the Sox are going to have Papelbon for the best part of his career and when it is over they will bring up another young arm to take his spot (Bard?) and life will go on.
