I seriously despise the Academy Awards. And now this year they've become more detestable. Instead of nominating 5 movies for Best Picture, they decided to nominate 10. Why? Money.
Moviemakers now get to slap the "Nominated for Best Picture" sticker on twice as many DVD boxes. But the Awards themselves get twice as many movie fans to watch and hope that their favorite flick gets recognized.
This is like the NCAA's idea to expand March Madness. It's not about the actual contest, it's about adding more contestants so there's more money.
And how the fuck do you nominate District 9 but not Star Trek? JJ Abrams revitalized a franchise from a cult classic into a mainstream, big budget popcorn hit. Peter Jackson made a movie about apartheid that was about 20 years too late.
Fuck award shows in general. Do these cocky Hollywood types really need more pats on the back. Do they need more praise, more trophies, more meaningless accomplishments?
Fuck Hollywood.
