The Definition Of "Going For It"

Every once in a while you come across a person that is so crazy that you have to respect him for it. Well, this is one of those stories.

A man who claims to own Palmerston North has turned down an offer to have a shoplifting charge dropped.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Mike Toon said Maori activist Carwyn Kawana was a man who stayed true to his word and offered to drop the shoplifting charge in exchange for a vow to stay on the right side of the law.

Kawana was offered the deal in Palmerston North District Court yesterday, the Manawatu Standard reported. All the stolen items had been returned to The Warehouse.

He stole from the store when he went to collect "rent" about six weeks after he delivered an eviction notice in July last year. He also issued eviction notices to Massey University, Linton Military Camp, Palmerston North City Council, and the Inland Revenue Department.

But Kawana refused the offer and told Judge Alistair Garland: "I will probably do it again, Your Honour." He was representing himself because "no-one in town will represent me". Kawana is to reappear later this month so a date can be set for his defended hearing (3News).

Wow, where to begin. First, how can this guy be surprised that no one will represent him? You are recklessly saying you awn an entire town, and going around into people's shops and taking shit. I respect the bold claim, but come on...

I really want to know why he thinks he owns this whole town. Is he really old? Just crazy? Decedent of a founder of the town? Just so many questions.

Still, at the end of the day you have to respect this guy for "just going for it". Not only is he going for it, but he is sticking with it. The courts tried to let him off, but he was like "no, fuck that I want my day in court". I would easily pay 100 bucks to sit in on his court appearance.
