The Red Sox expressed interest in Japanese free agent right-hander Kenshin Kawakami on the last day of the winter meetings, according to the Boston Herald.
The final spot in the Sox rotation is up for grabs, with names such as Justin Masterson, Clay Buchholz and free agent John Smoltz among the possibilities, the newspaper reported. Should the club's interest in the 33-year-old Kawakami grow, he also would be a candidate. Kawakami is believed to have an interest in pitching for the Red Sox.
Earlier this month, the Sox signed free agent Japanese reliever Junichi Tazawa to a major league deal, although he is expected to begin the season at Double A. ESPN
O man. This is the best news I have heard. Fuck Smoltz, Fuck Buchhola, leave Masterson in the bullpen, and fuck signing anyone else if we get this 33 year old god send. Kawakami is the man he has a 103-67 record in Japan and in that translates to about 300 wins in American baseball. If we could possibly sign Kenshin, we should do it.
