"With David Ortiz benched because of a prolonged slump and Kevin Youkilis out with an oblique strain, Red Sox scouts are doing "their due diligence" in looking at other hitters, the Boston Globe reported (ESPN)."
So far I am not hearing anything that is close. I have heard 3 players names so far in the Sox search to replace Ortiz...Nick Johnson, Todd Helton, and V-Mart. Obviously V-Mart is the best of that bunch, and would give the Sox some flexibility behind the plate. I would love him on the Sox, but knowing the Sox and the value of V-Mart I don't see the Sox trading the kind of pitching it would take to get that done.
Johnson is kind of interesting to me. He has had injuries over the past couple seasons, but it batting .333 this year with 3 HRs and 21 RBIs. I don't think it would take that much to land him either since he is in the last year of his contract. Of all three of the guys mentioned I think this is by far the most likely since the Sox love guys with great OBS, and Johnson is .421 right now and .398 for his career, which is fantastic.
The Todd Helton one is just foolish. The guy makes $16.6 million this year and next and $19.1 million in 2011. He is mad old, and the Sox don't need anymore aging corner infielders.
