LOST Recap: "Sundown"

What a great episode. As I have been doing I'm going to break this down by on-island and off-island.

OFF-ISLAND:

As we’ve seen throughout the final season, life in the "never crashed on the island timeline" is a bit better for most of our characters. Kate may still be a murderer, but she showed her sensitive side by creating a relationship with a very pregnant Claire. John Locke is about to marry Helen, finds a job as a substitute teacher, and is beginning to accept his life in a wheelchair. Jack repairs his relationship with his son, David. Yet, Sayid's never seems to change.

In the beginning of the episode it seems like Sayid's life is great. Nadia is still alive, he's not murdering people, and he seems to have a loving family. But as usual things aren't what they seem. We learn that his brother, Omar, is married to Sayid’s long-time love, Nadia. They have two children and live in suburban Los Angeles. Sayid still loves Nadia, as he carries a picture of her in his suitcase. This cause friction between his brother and him.

Things get even worse, as his brother owns money to some kind of Mob, which is headed up by Martin Keamy (the leader of the mercenary team that came to the island on Charles Widmore’s freighter and was murdered by Ben in Season 4). Sayid asks his brother for help, but Sayid says that he is not that kind of man anymore.

Sayid's brother ends up getting stabbed in the chest by Keamy's crew. Sayid takes action, but is stopped by Nadia. She begs him not to be that man anymore. He listens to her, but is later picked up by Keamy's crew. After a long speech (mostly about eggs) Keamy demands that Sayid start paying him. Sayid pulls his normal badass shit, and shoots everyone.

This leads very well into what happens on-island...

But first, at the end of the off-island portion of last night’s episode, we learn that Keamy has Jin locked in a refrigerator. We don’t know why, but I think we can safely assume it has something to do with the shitload of money Jin brought from Korea, which he got stopped at the airport for.

ON-ISLAND:

In short, things are getting crazy. Sayid wants answers from Dogan. Jack told him last episode that Dogen wanted Sayid dead (poison pill). After a talk about why the Others tortured him and wanted Sayid dead, we find out that the tests we to see the balance of good and evil in him. The balance is in favor of evil, and so it is better if he dies (according to Dogen).

Then one of the best fights scenes ever in LOST breaks out. It really was pretty awesome for a TV show. Anyways, Dogen ends up winning, and having a knife to Sayid's throat, when all of a sudden Dogen sees that baseball he is always playing with, and let's Sayid go. Sayid is forced to leave the temple.

Before he can do that Claire shows up. She is still looking for her kid, and is looking like a crazy person. Her reason for coming is to let Dogen know there is someone (MIB) waiting for him outside. Dogen laughs this off, and put Claire in a hole.

Dogen sends Sayid out to kill Flocke, telling him to stab him in the chest with a special dagger before Flocke says a word. Sayid leaves and not soon after runs into Flocke. Flocke does say hi before Sayid can stab him, but even when he does stab him there is no blood ((I mean, he is made of smoke, so no blood shouldn’t be surprising) and Flocke is completely unaffected.

Flocke then dangles the idea of Sayid reuniting with Nadia (who is dead in this timeline). As we have seen many times on this show love can do some crazy things to characters.

Sayid heads back to the Temple. He gives a warning to all the Others that they have till sundown to leave the Temple or die. Sayid and Dogen have another long talk and we finally find out that the baseball was Dogen son's, who died after Dogen had to many drinks and crashed his car after picking his son up from baseball. We also find out that Jacob said he could bring his son back if Dogen would come to the island and never leave his "new job".

After the emotional speech Sayid still kills Dogen, and then turns around and kills his hippy assistant. Dogen’s death somehow allows Flocke to enter the Temple in the form of the Smoke Monster. He kills many of the Others, but leaves Kate, Claire, and Sayid untouched.

Ben, Illana, Sun, and Lupidus also make it to the Temple and hide in a secret passage with Miles before Smokey comes to kill them. Illana seems to know her way around the Temple pretty well, just like she knows her way around the island.

The episode ends with Sayid, Claire, and Flocke doing a creepy bad guy walk, and Kate stuck with them.

QUESTIONS:

- Why did Dogen have to die for Flocke to get into the Temple?

- Will Flocke now attack the Others that did leave the Temple?

- How does Flocke plan to get off the island?

- Where is Sawyer?

- Why does Illana know her way around the Temple/Island so well?

- Can Sayid/Claire be saved?

THEORIES:

- Did anyone else see the look Flocke gave Kate at the end of the episode. It looked to be like a "Claire is going to fuck you up" look. So, yea I think that's a battle that will happen soon.

- We know for sure now is that Dogen wasn't lying to Jack about the darkness growing in Sayid, nor that it would ultimately supplant the Sayid we knew and loved, as that's exactly what happened by the ending of this episode.

- I think Sayid is going to be bad from this point forth, but I just can't see them keeping Claire bad. Most shows don't kill baby momma's, but she is most likely already dead.

As always leave theories, or questions in the comments section.
