Rugby League, The Working Man's Game

Rugby League is the form of Rugby that most people don't know how much they love it. It is most similiar to American Football in that you have 6 chances to score a try, but it is also like Soccer in that there are no offense and defense, all one unit who has to play both.

A game of 13 on 13 with 6 forwards and 7 backs. The forwards typically take "bangers" which are just huge guys running straight at other huge guys. The backs are more well known for "getting it wide" or running some flashy play where they try to out-position the defense.

The game is known most for its HUGE hits and from an outsiders standpoint, reckless running tactics (bangers). There are ussualy 3-5 fist fights a game, however they ussually occur because the referee has missed a foul and the players want retribution. Rarely do these fights get out of hand, and the game normally starts back up in a couple minutes. For the most part everyone who plays the game are crazy assholes with anger problems.

The rules are simple, pass backwards or lateral, anyone behind the kicker at the time of the kick is eligable to pick up the ball, and when you tackle you have 3 seconds (which the ref will call out) to let your opponent go. The only rule on tackling is you must attempt below the neck. However there is no requirement to wrap the man or bring them to the ground safely. However! treating your opposition like a ragdoll will most likely get yourself a nice big fist in the mouth.

The big three competitions are the Engage Super League in England, the NRL (National Rugby League) in Australia and New Zealand, and the AMNRL (American National Rugby League). The following video is a montage called, "Rib Breakers 2009". THe video is an overview of the 2009 NRL season. I hope you enjoy.
