Biggest series of the year starts tonight. In my eyes if they don't at least take 3-4 their season is over. Boston has Clay Buchholz going against Javier Vasquez.
Vasquez has never had much success against the Sox. He is 3-7 with a 4.21 ERA against them, but the same can be said for Buchholz who is 0-2 with a 6.53 ERA. I am really really interested in tonight's game. I think we might get a chance to see if Buchholz has turned himself into a true ace. There is nothing harder then going into that wiffleball park of a stadium, going against this kind of lineup, and still winning. If Clay can do that tonight, he may have punched his "ACE" card.
Boston's offense lately has been carried by Beltre and Ortiz, and the good news is that they both own Vasquez. Beltre is hitting .441 in his career against him with 2 HRs in 34 ABs, and Ortiz is hitting .320 off him with 2 HRs in 25 ABs. Boston is really going to need them to make up the difference with Youk out of the lineup. Another guy I want to see do something is Ellsbury, who has struggled in his first 2 games back going 0-8. With Youk out of the lineup Boston really needs guys to get on base for Ortiz/Beltre, that means Scutaro and Ellsbury really have to pick up some slack.
Maybe this is just blind hope, but I do think the Sox will win tonight. As for the rest of the series I'm not so sure, but if they do get crushed in this series I want to start seeing guys like Lars Anderson come up and play, because it will be time to plan for the future, and build up the value of prospects we can deal for Prince Fielder/Adrian Gonzalez.
Boston wins 6-3
Player of the Game: Ortiz/Buchholz
