Rumor: Cabrera to Red Sox
Many people have mixed feelings on Peter Gammons, but I think he is awesome. Today I got a phone call from DP (who is traveling), and he said he was watchign ESPN, and Gammons was running his mouth about how Miguel Cabrera could be on the Red Sox by the trading deadline. Apperently things are so bad in Detriot that they are going to have to do a fire sale to get rid of salary. No better place to start then with your biggest contract. This actually kind of makes sense when you sit back and think about it. If Detroit really does need to cut payroll, then the best thing they can do is stockpile young talent. If that is the case they are going to be looking for teams with great farm systems. In my eyes that would be teams like Sox, Rays, Baltimore, Texas, ect.
From a Sox perspective it makes great sense. They can pay that kind of contract. They have a shitload of young arms that can afford to deal. They need a replacement from Manny (and maybe even Ortiz/Lowell), and they have a guy at first that can easily move to 3rd.
The young pitchers that the Tigers would be targeting would be Buccholz, Masterson, Bowden, Bard (probably in that exact order). Boston would most likely have to give up two, and a young hitter. So a deal could look like Buccholz, Bowden, and Reddick.
Anyways, I don't know how true all this is, but it is fun to think about the Sox lineup with a guy like Cabrera in it...
