Red Sox 6, Orioles 5
The Sox are 8-2 against Baltimore. Considering the division has teams like the Yankees and Rays, and even a tough Toronto side, the O's are like a vacation. You know how college football teams like Oklahoma and USC schedule cupcakes like Northern Colorado in the middle of the season? That's what the AL East has in the Orioles.
John Smoltz continues to look poor. 6 innings, 5 earned runs, and if it weren't for a 2 run Youkilis HR in the 7th, he wouldv'e had his 5th loss of the season.
Josh Beckett faces 24 year old David Hernandez Saturday night, and we all know how the Sox tend to do against younger pitchers.

Peavy To White Sox
The Chicago White Sox acquired Jake Peavy from the San Diego Padres for four players.
The Sox sent pitchers Aaron Poreda, Clayton Richard, Dexter Carter and Adam Russell.
Peavy, who has been on the disabled list since June 9 with an ankle injury, had a complete no-trade clause. He's a two-time All-Star and won the Cy Young Award in 2007.
Hell of a deal for both teams. I predicted the White Sox would make some noise this year, and if Peavy can return to for he will absolutely kill it for the White Sox. He is a stud and will put the White Sox over the top. Also, it is very good that the White Sox Held onto Dayan Viciedo as he is the future of baseball.

Sox Trade LaRoche For Kotchman
"Yahoo! Sports's Gordon Edes reports that the Red Sox have dealt Adam LaRoche to the Braves for first baseman Casey Kotchman. Kotchman, 26, is batting .282 with six homers and 41 RBIs this season (Boston.com)."
LaRoche had to go since there was really no spot for him. I have actually always been a big Kotchman fan, but you would think he is going to have to go to the minors, because he really doesn't have a spot either. Anyways, been a good day for the Sox. V-Mart is going to be the balls!
The Sox also gave up about $1 million in this deal.

Breaking News: Sox get Victor Martinez (2 UPDATES)
"A source confirms to FoxSports's Jon Paul Morosi and Ken Rosenthal that the Sox are on the verge of acquiring Martinez. Still no word on what the Sox will be giving up.
According to a tweet by USA Today baseball writer Bob Nightengale, the Red Sox are about to acquire Victor Martinez from the Indians. We'll have more on this report if/when it can be confirmed.
According to the FoxSports report, the Martinez deal is straight-up between the Red Sox and Indians with no third team is involved. The report also notes that the deal will "almost certainly end" the Red Sox's pursuit of Gonzalez, who is likely to remain in San Diego (Boston.com)."
We will get more word on what the Sox gave up very soon. My guess is that it is probably Buchholz or Bowden. Great move for the Sox. Now they can play less Tek, while still giving some time off for Lowell. I am so excited......but we'll have more very soon!!!!
***UPDATE***
"FoxSports reports that "the Indians' exact return is not known, but the Red Sox did not include either righthander Clay Buchholz nor righthander Daniel Bard in the deal, according to a source (Boston.com)."
According to our very own Scan it's Masterson and Hagadone. I'll confirm that in the next couple of mins....
Boston.com just confirmed what Scan reported (way to be!!!), but there might also be additional prospects, but they are expected to be low level. Materson and Hagadone are the two main pieces...
***UPDATE 2***
Final deal is V-Mart for Justin Masterson and Bryan Price and Nick Hagadone.

Twins Get Orlando Cabrera
"The Minnesota Twins have acquired shortstop Orlando Cabrera from Oakland in exchange for minor-league shortstop Tyler Ladendorf, CBSSports.com has learned (Sportsline)."
Cabrera has been real hot of late, as he is currently riding a 11-game hitting streak. During that stretch Cabrera is batting .375 (18 for 48). The Twins middle infield sucks, so this is a big pickup for them.
The Twins had to give up their second-round pick from last summer's draft. He could be something special, but he is at least 3 years away from really making any kind of impact.

Sox Still Talking To San Diego (2 UPDATES)
"The Globe's Tony Massarotti just checked in to report that according to well-placed baseball source, the Red Sox and Padres are continuing discussions this morning about Adrian Gonzalez. It is unclear which Red Sox prospects the Padres are pursuing, but considering that San Diego lacks depth in its farm system, there is the possibility that the Red Sox could supply San Diego a collection of players while hanging on to some of their elite prospects (Boston.com)."
I trust Mazz more then any other writer in Boston. This is a really good sign that the Sox have a shot here. San Diego has to rebuild their farm system and the Sox have one of the best in baseball, so maybe a deal could be pulled off without having to empty the entire farm system. I think by the end of the day the Sox will have either Gonzalez or V-Mart.
It should also be noted that the Jays GM has come out and said there are no deals on the table and he expect Halladay to be with the team the rest of the year.
***UPDATE***
"According to ESPN.com's Rumor Central (Insider only), Jayson Stark reports that the Red Sox have "pokers in the fire" on Halladay, Gonzalez, and Martinez as of this morning. He also speculates that the Red Sox would need a third team in the deal to acquire Gonzalez, if only because the recently acquired Adam LaRoche would probably need to be dealt elsewhere . . . SI.com's Jon Heyman notes that the Sox are poised to make a splash at the deadline, and a rival executive tells him believes Gonzalez is the primary target."
It sounds like the only thing holding up the Gonzalez deal is finding a 3rd team to take LaRoche...
*** UPDATE 2***
"Heyman's SI.com blog updates his tweet regarding Gonzalez and the Sox. He notes that the sides are discussing a "big package" that includes Buchholz, Masterson and Lowrie in exchange for Gonzalez. However, Heyman writes, the sides are still pretty far apart, and Boston is still in the mix for Cleveland's Victor Martinez. He also notes that the Padres are pressing for prospects Lars Anderson and Ryan Westmoreland, but that the Sox may have deemed Westmoreland and pitcher/shortstop Casey Kelly untouchable (Boston.com)."
It doesn't sound like they are going to be able to pull this off in time. You have to wonder if this will make the Sox turn around and really go hard after V-Mart who should be going for a much lower value then Gonzalez.

Wakefield Back Tuesday
"The Boston Globe reports that Red Sox SP Tim Wakefield's lower-back strain is improving and that he hopes to be activated by Tuesday (Sportsline)."
Good, because the back end of the Sox rotation has been horrible. This will make things every interesting. Smoltz/Buchholz/Penny have all not pitched well, but then again the trade deadline hasn't passed, so it is tough to say what the Sox will do. If I was them I would really start thinking about putting Smoltz in the bullpen, and see if he can back to his old days when he was a closer for the Braves...

Vick To Redskins Gaining Momentum
"Jason Campbell can't catch a break. At nearly every step this offseason, the Redskins have been linked to another QB, and with comments made recently by Jim Zorn and some other 'Skins coaches, he may have Michael Vick breathing down his neck at some point this season. An anonymous Redskins coach told Fox 31 in Denver that, "There is definitely a number of us who would love to have him play here. I can tell you I would not mind at all." While a little bit dismissive, head coach Jim Zorn left the door open in saying before Washington's first training camp practice that they would not be signing Vick "at this juncture." The insinuation here is that the team will have Vick's cell number handy if Campbell struggles to start the 2009 campaign.
Meanwhile, Vick's contention that he was close to signing with a team has been refuted by what a source has told ESPN's John Clayton. Clayton notes that it's likely we won't see a Vick signing until training camps are "well under way" (ESPN)."
Lets get one thing straight. Vick has not played in a couple years and right now is not a starting QB. People who think he is better then Jason Campbell are fucking retarded. Actually I think Jason Campbell is very underrated, and if the team would just off his back he could put up some solid numbers this year. If the Skins want to sign Vick, and use him for certain plays...fine, but he is not a starter right now. He has a long way to prove he can play at that level again.

Tigers Trade For Washburn
"The Tigers have acquired left-hander Jarrod Washburn from the Mariners, CBSSports.com has learned. Luke French and minor leaguer Mauricio Robles go to the Mariners in the deal (Sportsline)."
Nice deal for the Tigers as none of the prospects they gave up were ranked in the top 10 in their system. Washburn adds to what was already a strong Tigers rotation, with Justin Verlander and Edwin Jackson. This should put them over the top to win the AL Central. The Tigers have not been doing well in the scoring runs department, but Carlos Guillen is coming off the DL, and with such a strong rotation the Tigers are in good shape.
DP's Take
"The Mariners have traded SP Jarrod Washburn to the Tigers for SP Luke French and SP Mauricio Robles. Washburn will slot in nicely in the middle of the Tigers rotation, giving Detroit solid top three SPs in Justin Verlander, Edwin Jackson and Washburn. His Fantasy value takes a decent little bump with this move, as the Tigers are a slight upgrade from the Mariners. Washburn remains a solid starting SP in the majority of mixed leagues. French has pitched well on occasion this year with a 1-2 record and 3.38 ERA. He should replace Washburn in the Seattle rotation, but remains just a low-end AL-only option for the time being. A left-hander like French, Robles is 8-6 with a 4.24 in the minors this season and is not on the Fantasy radar just yet." CBS
I doubt French will start in place of Washburn with the recent acquisition of Ian Snell. However, I like this move for Detroit. Detroit's starting three is now Justin Verlander, Edwin Jackson, and Jarrod Washburn, not bad. Although, I'm not going to sit here and say I have much faith in Jarrod Washburn, I do know that he has proven me wrong thus far this year, and if he is to keep it up, the Tigers will blow the AL Central race out of the water.

Drew Brees Needs To Get A few Things Off His Chest
"I can say this after that experience -- the worst thing we can do is shut that baby down, for a lot of reasons," Brees said. "But I think there's a big misconception as to how we are treating those prisoners; those detainees over there. They are being treated probably 10 times better than any prisoner in a U.S. prison."
"I mean, they're allowed to call and write letters home, and receive letters and calls. They get five opportunities a day to pray, and they have arrows in the prison pointing towards where Mecca is. And the prison goes dead silent so these guys can have their religious time. They have rooms where they can watch movies and play Nintendo Wii. So I think that just goes ahead and says it right there."
Ummmmmmmm. I like it. Normally I hate when athletes and celebrities make bold claims, however, I love Brees' bold claim. And I believe him. Before this came out, I thought Guantanamo Bay was where they torture people and do terrible things, but apparently it is just a vacation resort. Kinda makes me want to be a terrorist.

Odom Stays With Lakers
"The Los Angeles Lakers have at last reached terms on a new contract with sixth man Lamar Odom, after a month of frosty negotiations that might have troubled the team and its fans more than just about anything they saw during last season's playoff drive to the championship (ESPN)."
I really thought he might go to the Heat. Wade was making a real hard push for him to return, but the chance to play with Kobe, and collect another Championship was just too much. From what I am reading the deal is a 4 year deal worth up to $33 million if the Lakers exercise their option on the 4th season. With Artest joining the team, and most of their other players back (Kobe, Gasol, ect), this team should be considered one of (if not the) favorite in the West.

Reggie Bush Hates Kanye West
"Kim Kardashian and Reggie Bush's split wasn't as amicable as they're making it out to be. An insider told FOXNews.com's Pop Tarts that their relationship had been "been rocky for a little while " because the two weren't seeing as much of each other as they once had, with Kim's increasing fame and their separate business commitments keeping them apart most of the time. Now another source tells FOX411 that there was another, bigger reason behind the split: Kanye West.
"Reggie saw text messages on Kim's phone from Kanye West and flipped out on her," the source tells FOX411.
And these weren't your average friendly messages.
"The texts referenced a night they hung out, how much fun he had, how hot Kim was, and more racy things that got Reggie's imagination running," says the source.
When Reggie confronted Kim about it, the couple had a huge blow-up, and jealousy issues, which had been pretty much kept out of their relationship until this incident ,surfaced, according to the insider (FoxNews)."
I hope Reggie Bush fucks him up. I hate Kanye West. He is a fucking moron, who thinks he way smarter and important then he really is. I didn't really like Bush coming out of USC, but I have grown more and more respect more him, but now I just hope he goes DMX on all these motherfuckers....

The Latest On Red Sox Trade Rumors
We will probably be making a lot of updates on this today, but here is what we are hearing this morning...
Victor Martinez - It is being said that the Sox have continued talks with the Indians. From the beginning the Indians have stated that Buchholz has to be part of the deal, which the Sox earlier rejected. It seems the Sox might be changing their tone a bit...
"ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reports the Red Sox and Indians were discussing a three-way trade Thursday night that would send Victor Martinez to Boston, Clay Buchholz to Cleveland and prospects flying in all directions. The Red Sox also would attempt to move recently acquired Adam LaRoche, either to a third team or in a companion deal, to make room for Martinez in their lineup, one source said (ESPN)."
Adrian Gonzalez - As of last night things were not looking good for Gonzalez coming to the Sox. The Padres want a package that would at least include Buchholz, Michael Bowden, Daniel Bard and others in the deal. The Sox seem extremely reluctant to trade Bard, as they have plans for him to be the closer after Papelbon retires, and he is doing a great job in the bullpen right now. The deal is not done, and both teams are still talking, but as of right now they are no closer to a deal.
Roy Halladay - Buster Olney of ESPN has come out and said that trade talks for Halladay are "dead" and not just for the Red Sox. It seems the Jays have scared off a lot of the teams that were interested. Still there is always a chance the Sox/Yankees could make a last second push for the All-Star pitcher. There are also reports that the Rangers could jump into this race.
The deadline is at 4 today, and we'll keep you updated, but as of right now the only deal that looks likely is some kind of 3 team deal where the Sox get V-Mart.

Maybe Girls Aren't That Dumb...
A's 5 Red Sox 8
Yesterday was a long day for Sox fans (and players). Yet in the end they were able to bounce back and beat the A's, so I guess that is all that matters. Jon Lester allowed four runs on seven hits and three walks, striking out two in 5 2/3 innings. His stat like would have looked a lot better, but he fell apart in the 6th inning letting up all of his 4 runs that he allowed. At that point the Sox were down 4-1 and it really didn't look like the Sox bats were going to bail them out, but they did...
In the bottom of the 6th the Sox got back 2 of those runs, as Lowell hit a ground rule double scoring Ortiz, and then Varitek singled to right field for his 2nd RBI of the night. The Sox kept it going int he 7th when Papi hit a 3 run bomb off Breslow, and in the 8th Tek got his 3rd RBI of the night on a RBI double.
Bard and Papelbon shut the A's out in the 8th and 9th inning to get the Sox their 59th win of the season. Papelbon now has 26 saves on the year, and with the Yankees having the night off Boston gained a 1/2 game on the Yankees, so they are only 3 back now.

Dodgers Get George Sherrill From Orioles
"The Dodgers shored up their bullpen Thursday by acquiring Orioles closer George Sherrill in exchange for two prospects, third baseman Josh Bell and pitcher Steve Johnson, according to baseball sources (MLB.com)."
Sherrill has been one of the most underrated closers in the game over the past two seasons. This is a nice pickup for the Dodgers, who will still be looking for some starting pitching help. Sherrill will serve as the left-handed setup man for Jonathan Broxton. Sucks for anyone who has Sherrill on their fantasy team. The Orioles likely will turn struggling Jim R. Johnson or veteran Danys Baez to close now.

Cubs Trade For Reliever John Grabow
The Pirates just won't stop trading everyone on their team....
"The Chicago Cubs are in the process of finalizing a trade for Pittsburgh Pirates left-handed reliever John Grabow, a source close to the situation told ESPNChicago.com (ESPN)."
Not sure what the Cubs are going to give up, but this is a very smart move by the Cubs. Before this trade the Cubs only had 1 lefty in their bullpen (Sean Marshall), so this will add some depth which is desperately needed. Grabow is 3-0 with a 3.42 ERA with 41 strikeouts and 28 walks in 47 1/3 innings. Very nice deal for the Cubs as long as they didn't give up much, which I would doubt.

Top 25 Under 25: #23 Tommy Hanson
Tommy Hanson
Born: 08/28/86
In 2005, Hanson was selected in the 22nd round (Pick 677) by the Atlanta Braves. Before the 2007 season began, Hanson was named the best pitching prospect in the South Atlantic League, and the Braves fans started going crazy over the thoughts of what he might be. This is an organization that has seen pitchers like Glavine, Smoltz, and Maddux, so when a player like this gets that kind of hype you know he has to be something special.
Hanson was promoted to AA after only allowing 15 hits in 40 innings with a 3-1 record and 0.90 ERA. He didn't stop making noise when he was moved up, as he pitched a no-hitter in only his 9th start (he also threw 14 K's in that game). The legend only grew as he was invited to the Arizona Fall League to showcase his pitching. He compiled a 5-0 record with a 0.63 ERA while racking up 49 K's in 28.2 innings. Hanson was named the Arizona Fall League's MVP, which was the first time a pitcher had ever won that award.
Hason was almost traded for Jake Peavy in the beginning of this year, but the deal fell through and Hanson finally got his shot as a full time starter when the Braves cut ties with Tom Glavine. So far this year he is 5-1 with a 2.95 ERA, and looking more and more like he will be the ace for the Braves for years to come. At only 22 years old Tommy Hanson has a chance to really climb this list in the coming years...

Wakefield Injury Update
"The Boston Globe reports that Tim Wakefield is now throwing from 60 feet. Manager Terry Francona said it has been going slowly, as the Sox attempt to prevent Wakefield from going backward in his recovery from a sore lower back. There is no timetable for his return (Sportsline)."
The Sox don't want to rush the old man, but it is looking more and more like the Sox need him back quickly. He was one of the Sox better pitchers in the first half, but he has suffered the last couple of years because of this bad back. I hope he is back soon, but you just never know. My guess is that he is still at least 2 weeks away from making it back.

Firesale Continues Pirates Trade Sanchez To Giants
"The Giants acquired Sanchez and made it a convenient switch for the three-time All-Star hours after double-play partner and shortstop Jack Wilson was traded to Seattle. The teams announced the swap following the Giants' 1-0, 10-innings victory -- so Sanchez merely had to change clubhouses to join his new organization, which is in the thick of the NL wild-card race. San Francisco sent minor league pitcher Tim Alderson to the Pirates for the 31-year-old Sanchez, the 2006 NL batting champion (Sportsline)."
The Giants are trying to make the playoffs for the first time since 2003 and have had4 straight losing seasons, but this year they are 1/2 game up on the Rockies for the Wild Card spot. This move gives them another bat, which they desperately need. Sanchez is hitting .296 with six home runs and 34 RBI, but has been having some knee problem lately, so that could be a concern.
The Pirates did get a decent return in this deal as Tim Alderson was the Giants 4th best prospect last season. He is known for having an "unconventional delivery", and his best pitches are his mid 90's fastball and a curveball that is getting better by the day.

More Talk Of Gonzalez To Red Sox
CBSSports.com's Scott Miller reports the following on his blog ...
"My sources tell me that the Red Sox are interested in San Diego first baseman Adrian Gonzalez. The Red Sox approached the Padres several weeks ago but were told at that time that Gonzalez was staying put. San Diego now appears to have had a change of heart and is at least exploring a potential deal for its All-Star slugger less than 48 hours before Friday's 4 p.m. EDT non-waivers trade deadline (Sportsline)."
I agree with DP was writing before, and I am usually the more conservative fan when it comes to trading, but the Sox need some kind of shake up. They seemed to have had a lot of interest in Adrian Gonzalez for a long time now. The padres are not entertaining offers for him, so the Sox have to be all over this. There is no word on what it would take to get him, but my guess it would have to include Buchholz and Lars Anderson. We'll keep ya posted.

Big XII Football Preview
The Big XII provided the most controversy, and possibly the most excitement in college football last year. And once again, the two big teams in the Big XII - Texas and Oklahoma - will be contenders, with Texas being a heavy favorite to win the National Championship.
1. TEXAS LONGHORNS
The Longhorns will win the Big XII South without tie-breakers, then the Big XII title game in Arlongton, and then the National Championship in Pasadena. Colt McCoy finished 2nd in Heisman voting, in case anyone forgot. And Texas didn't lose much talent. They beat Oklahoma last year, and beat Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl. They're loaded, and they're going all the way, unfortunately. But hey, at least they're not USC or fucking Florida.
However, they might be tested in the middle of the season, with back-to-back trips to Missouri, and Oklahoma State. Those aren't easy places for anyone to win in.
Key games:
10/17 vs. Oklahoma (Dallas, TX)
10/24 @ Missouri
10/31 @ Oklahoma State
Prediction:
13-1, Big XII Champs, BCS Champs
2. OKLAHOMA SOONERS
The Sooners have the reigning Heisman winner, but lost 4/5 of their offensive line, which gave Sam Bradford the time to make so many big plays. The Sooners also lost talent in their receiving corps. OU is great at reloading, and if they were in just about any other conference, they'd contend for a conference title. But they'll lose the Red River Shootout in October, and perhaps Bedlam against Oklahoma State in November.
I do think they'll have the talent and ability to figure out how to impress people, and earn a BCS berth. But maybe it would be better to settle for an easier win in the Cotton Bowl. The Sooners haven't won a bowl game since 2005, and haven't taken home a BCS Bowl trophy since 2002.
Key games:
9/5 vs. Brigham Young (Arlington, TX)
10/3 @ Miami
10/17 vs. Texas (Dallas, TX)
11/7 @ Nebraska
11/28 vs. Oklahoma State
Prediction:
11-2, Fiesta Bowl loss
3. OKLAHOMA STATE COWBOYS
Oklahoma State replaces Texas Tech in the spoiler role for the Big XII South. Last year, how Texas and OU fared against Tech turned out to be much more important than how they did against each other. The same could turn out to be true about Oklahoma State in '09.
Similar to Texas Tech, OSU has an insane offense, and a very susceptible defense. They return 8 starters to an offensive unit that averaged nearly 500 yards a game. But on defense, they struggle to pressure QBs, and their coverage units are frequently scorched. That combination doesn't bode well in a conference with Colt McCoy and Sam Bradford.
Key games:
9/5 vs. Georgia
10/31 vs. Texas
11/28 @ Oklahoma
Prediction:
10-3, Cotton Bowl Champs
4. NEBRASKA CORNHUSKERS
The Blackshirts are back. Nebraska's defense is capable of propelling them to the Big XII title game. They also have a very fortunate schedule. Out of conference, apart from a trip to Blacksburg to play VA-Tech, the Cornhuskers host Florida Atlantic, Arkansas State, and Louisiana-Lafayette. They also don't have to play either Texas or Oklahoma State. And their matchup against Oklahoma is in Lincoln.
Nebraska has little offensive firepower, but they won't really need it to win the Big XII North.
Key games:
9/19 @ Virginia Tech
10/8 @ Missouri
11/7 Oklahoma
11/14 @ Kansas
Prediction:
10-4, Big XII North Champs, Holiday Bowl Champs
And the rest, in alphabetical order...
BAYLOR BEARS
Baylor is no longer a guaranteed win for opponents in the Big XII. QB Robert Griffin threw for 2,000+ yards and 28 TDs in his freshman year, along with 843 yards on the ground and only 3 INTs. The Bears won't contend for the Big XII South, and will be fortunate to finish the season bowl eligible, but thanks to Texas A&M, they're no longer the worst Big XII team in Texas. And watch out for this squad to surprise a Big XII powerhouse with a scare game, as most of the big teams have to come down to Waco to face Baylor.
Key games:
9/19 vs. UConn
10/10 @ Oklahoma
10/24 vs. Oklahoma State
10/31 vs. Nebraska
11/14 vs. Texas
COLORADO BUFFALOES
Where are you Kordell Stewart? Boulder turns its lonely eyes to you.
CU sucks at just about everything that matters. There are question marks at QB, a below average offensive line returns 4 starters, which is probably a bad thing, and a there's a defensive line that couldn't put pressure on a mosquito. The Buffaloes will be the Big XII North whipping boys, except when they play Iowa State.
Key games:
10/1 @ West Virginia
10/10 @ Texas
11/19 @ Oklahoma State
11/27 vs. Nebraska
IOWA STATE CYCLONES
New coach Paul Rhodes inherits a program that was 2-10, and 0-8 in conference play. This is another team that sucks on toast, both offensively and defensively. They need to make Seneca Wallace get some plastic surgery, come back as Cayuga Waltrip, and play QB.
Key games (one's they might win):
9/3 vs. North Dakota State
9/26 vs. Army
11/14 vs. Colorado
KANSAS JAYHAWKS
Just one or two good years and people think KU has an amazing program. I'm still not sold on anything in Kansas that isn't basketball. But they do have a comical out of conference schedule (Northern Colorado, @ UTEP, Duke, Southern Miss), so contending for a Big XII North title, and a longshot at the BCS isn't totally out of the question.
QB Todd Reesing is solid, and has a pair of 1,000+ yard receivers to throw to. But there are weaknesses, as well as dates with Oklahoma and Texas on the schedule.
Key games:
10/24 vs. Oklahoma
11/14 vs. Nebraska
11/21 @ Texas
KANSAS STATE WILDCATS
There are some solid players in Manhattan. But the QB spot is still up for grabs. Then again, the Wildcats have some cupcake games to figure that out before they play their first real team on October 10th. K-State could surprise people, either with a big upset win, or bowl eligibility.
Key games:
10/31 @ Oklahoma
11/7 vs. Kansas
11/21 @ Nebraska
MISSOURI TIGERS
No Chase Daniel, and the Tigers are left struggling. Mizzou also lost most of its other skill players, as well as 7 defensive starters. Unlike the powers in the Big XII, teams like Missouri need a few years to recover from such losses. The Tigers might make some noise in the Big XII North, and could help DETERMINE who goes to the conference title game, but they won't COMPETE for the divisional title.
Key games:
10/8 vs. Nebraska
10/17 @ Oklahoma State
10/24 vs. Texas
11/14 @ Kansas State
11/28 vs. Kansas (Kansas City, MO)
TEXAS A&M AGGIES
The Aggies might have a decent passing game, which they'll need because they'll be behind most of the time. They have NO running game, which is sacrilegious in the Big XII. They were 114th in the country last year with 88.5 rushing yards per game. Both their offensive and defensive lines are consistently pushed back, and their only conference wins in '08 came against Colorado and Iowa State.
The Aggies might just be the worst team in Texas.
Key games (winnable ones):
9/5 vs. New Mexico
9/19 vs. Utah State
10/31 vs. Iowa State
11/7 @ Colorado
TEXAS TECH RED RAIDERS
No Harrel, no Crabtree, but somehow Texas Tech will average 500 passing yards and 30 points a game once more. The unsung hero of TTU's 2008 campaign was Brandon Williams, who's also gone. Tech will always have a prolific offense, but last year their defense was almost as fierce, especially in the pass-rushing area, because of guys like Williams. Tech will provide audiences with some thrilling 49-42 games. Good for us fans, bad for Tech.
Key games:
9/19 @ Texas
10/17 @ Nebraska
10/31 vs. Kansas
11/14 @ Oklahoma State
11/21 vs. Oklahoma

Why Not?
For the people who don't know this kid you will not get it, but those of you who know him probably will chuckle.
A's @ Red Sox Preview
Sox are playing a day game today, but I am sitting in the Hancock Tower right now and it is raining hard, so this game may not be starting till late...
Today (or maybe tonight) Jon Lester will take the hill. There have really only been two constants since the All-Star break, and that is the play of Jon Lester and Josh Beckett. Lester has a 1.83 ERA since May 31 which leads all AL starters. He's 6-2 in that 10 game span with a .202 opponents' BA and 84 K's over 69 innings all of which is fucking impressive. The Sox are going to need him to be on top of his game, as they have dropped 8 of 12 since the All-Star break, including the last 2 games in this series to fall 3 1/2 games behind surging Yankees.
The A's counter with Gio Gonzalez. Gio was supposed to be the next great pitcher from Oakland, but has never been able to put it together in the majors. He can be wild at times, but can also rack up some K's. He is a hard guy to figure out since last time out he was nasty going 6 2/3 innings letting up only 1 run on 2 hits with 6 K's against the Yankees, but the start before that he was lit up for 11 runs by the Twins. So, who know what this guy is going to do.
Here is a look at the Sox lineup for today's game...
1. Jacoby Ellsbury, CF
2. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
3. Kevin Youkilis, 1B
4. Jason Bay, LF
5. David Ortiz, DH
6. Mike Lowell, 3B
7. J.D. Drew, RF
8. Jason Varitek, C
9. Nick Green, SS
Game starts at 1:35pm (hopefully) on NESN.
Heath Miller Signs Extension
On Wednesday evening, Miiller agreed to a six-year, $35.3 million deal that includes a $12.5 million signing bonus, according a source. Miller was entering the final year of his contract and was scheduled to make around $1.8 million this season. The extension will keep him with the Steelers through the 2014 season. ESPN
This move makes me extremely happy. Heath Miller may not be the pass catch tight end that Tony Gonzalez or Kellen Winslow is, but he is a perfect fit for the Steelers. He is great at blocking, and has bailed Big Ben out numerous times as the check down receiver when he is scrambling. He is starting to have a bigger role in the offense as Miller caught 48 passes for 514 yards and three touchdowns last season. He had 47 catches in 2007. Also, with Miller signed that also takes a player off their free agency platter next year that basically includes every impact player next year.
The Sox Need To Make A Move
You know the Red Sox fans that freak out when something goes wrong and say the Sox need to make a bold move and often talk out of their ass? Well, I'm one of those fans. For Months I said that the Sox need to trade for Halladay, and they really should. Now that we are 3.5 down from the Yankees, I honestly believe Doc is the only cure for this team. Lets face it, Penny Sucks, Smoltz Sucks, who knows what is going on with Wake and Dice K. If we traded for Doc That would make our starting 3, Beckett, Lester, and Doc. How ridiculous is that? Not only would I think a trade would put a spark into the team mentally, but it would be adding the best pitcher in the game. I really would like V-Mart(who the Indians turned down a one on one trade which we would have given the Indians Clay Buchholz) or Adrian Gonzalez, however, I'm a fan of having too much pitching, than hitting. And for people worried about Doc bouncing after two years, fine. I will gladly take two world series trophies and have him leave, then losing in the play-offs again.
Garza Hit Teixeira On Purpose
"Tampa Bay's Matt Garza hit New York Yankees slugger Mark Teixeira with a fifth-inning pitch Wednesday night, then said he did it because he's tired of opposing pitchers throwing at Rays All-Star Evan Longoria. "They can take whatever they want from it from it, but I just kind of got tired of people brushing him back. It's about time someone made a statement," Garza said, noting that Longoria was hit by a pitch in the opener of the three-game series on Monday night. "I hate to be that guy, but someone had to take a stand and say we're tired of it," the right-hander added. "You can go after our best guy. Well, we'll make some noise, too, and that's what happened (ESPN)."
Good for you Garza. Pitchers should stand up for their players, and that is exactly what Garza did here. I have always liked Garza. He is only 25 years old, and I feel like he is just going to get better and better. You know the Yankees are going to answer again for this, but it is worth it in the end, because if the Rays are going to get back into the AL East race they are going to need that "us vs. the world" mentality.
