"Xavier will promote Chris Mack to succeed Sean Miller as the school's head basketball coach, multiple sources told CBSSports.com on Tuesday. A press conference is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday. Miller left Xavier last week to succeed Lute Olson at Arizona. Almost immediately, Mack was tabbed as the leading candidate, and his position was strengthened when Miller -- plus most of the players and recruits --endorsed the 39-year-old assistant (Sportsline)."
To me this is a great move. I don't think enough teams hire from within, and this guy has paid his dues and deserves the job. He is a former player, and has been with the team for a long time. Xavier runs a very good program and is consistently on the top of the A-10, and even though it is a week conference Xavier is usually in the top 25. The team that they have right now can challenge for a Final 4 bid next year, so keeping the same philosophies is important. That's why hiring from within and have as much continuity as possible is their best bet.
